New Member with Kidney Cyst's

Hello to everyone, I am 57 years old male. 14 days ago I started not feeling well and had a med amount of pain around my right back rib area along with low-grade fever. I went to the doctor and she ordered a battery of tests along with an abdominal ultrasound. I was called back into the office a couple of days ago so the doctor could brief me on the test results.

 All blood and urine came back good but the ultrasound not so good below are the results;

Right Kidney - Complex Cyst with Septation measuring 3.2cm X 2.9cm and a second Cyst measuring 3.5cm X 2.3cm. Didn’t say if the second Cyst was Complex with Septation.

 So my analytical mind says I have a (3.2cm X 2.9cm) + (3.5cm X 2.3cm) = 6.7cm X 5.2cm Cyst on my right kidney.

To further muddy the waters I continue to read about Cyst vs. Mass vs. Tumor and it all just seems to be a play on words and means the same. Bottom line is I have something growing in my body that should not be there. Kinda of freaks me out.

I know I’m in the baby steps of this process and am waiting for my first visit with the Urologist but can’t help but worry, its human nature I guess.

Can’t help but think that surgery is in my future that also freaks me out. Thanks for listening to me today and I will keep everyone updated on how this goes.

Dennis

    The good news

    Mr. D.,

The good news is that if it is Cancer they got it relatively early and with 2 cysts that size you are lucky that both are in the same kidney as bilateral whatever it is is not good.

The Uro will no doubt order a CT to further define the cysts and with 2 cysts in/on the same kidney you may well have a full nepherectomy if it does turn out to be suspicious of Cancer. For now lets hope they can classify it as benign. . Mine was 13 years ago at a then young 59 so I as well as the others know how you feel. We have all been there and done that. This is a club where we all try to help each other get through and which nobody in their right mind would volunteer to join.

    Complex

While I am blessed with cancer, my brother escaped with a kidney cyst. I am going off memory, but his was simple (CT scan).

had it been complex, they were going to take it out as that can lead to kidney cancer. Given the high risk with his brother (me) having RCC, it is possible they were being conservative.

If it does have to come out, a partial is nit a bad recovery. The biggest thing is they you monitor it. If it starts to change more, get it out and be done with it.

    Best of luck!

    Welcome Dennis

It is worrisome to hear that news. But it could be a very simple fix for you. Try not to let this worry you too much (hahaha). Procedures, testing and medications have come a long way.

We are here to support you!

So sorry to hear you're going

So sorry to hear you're going through this but do not combine the two cysts into one big one. You basically have two small ones and that makes a difference. Depending on where they are located, partial surgery if necessary is an option. The second cyst may not even require removal if it's just a simple, fluid filled one. They'll just monitor it. I had an open partial for a 3.5 cm tumor and it was not nearly as bad as I had feared. Hang in there and try not to stress too much. Wishing you the best!

    A cyst is not

cancer, although it can increase in size.  I have cysts in my remaining kidney, in my liver, and pancreas.  The only reason I know that is because of so many CT's, ultra-sounds and x-rays during the past 9 years. Cysts can be fluid or fatty tumors, or a protective capsule around an injury or scar tissue, such as in the lungs from pneumonia or TB.   More than likely, a large percentage of the population have cysts in various organs, but as along as they aren't causing problems or symptoms, they are never found.

In your case, you had symptoms that were investigated, and the dr's will proceed from that.

When I was dx'd, the word "mass" or masses, was used, as they knew something was in both the right kidney and the liver that shouldn't be there.  It's one of those non-specific words that allows them to order a more definitive test.  Either at that point, the physician reading the test will say tumor(s) or they will wait until a biopsy or surgery to say it is cancer-malignacy/metastasized or a benign cyst or tumor.

Don't sell the farm, until you have a complete DX and have discussed all options with more than one doc.

I know how you are feeling...I was 64 and Dx'd with Stage IV cancer, because they already could see it had spread.

Have hope and hang in there.

So I was reading my Ultrasound

So I was reading my Ultrasound and when I posted the above info on my Right Kidney I didn't think much about the Left Kidney as my GP didn't seem concerned.

    BUT, it says;

Left Kidney: Inferior cyst measuring 2.9cm X 2.2cm. No evidence of hydronephrosis.

    What does that mean?

My first Urogolist appointment is 14 Aug, so 2 weeks of waiting.

    Hydronephoris

    Mr, D,,

The above means swelling ofthe Kidney and I am  not aware of its relation to Kidney Cancer one way or the other. Your 2.9 cyst on the right Kidney is relatively small, but of concern because of whats on the left kidney. I would make sure the Uro you are seeing is an expert on Kidney Cancer and irrespective I would line up a second opinion as high up the food chain as possable whenever there is a chance that you have Kidney Cancer in both kidneys. In such cases they may want to freeze the tumor/ cyst (CYRO) or zap it (RFA).While I may be able to raise questions for your doctors the answere are going to have to come from someone with a lot more letters after their name than myself.

    Hydronephrosis is buildup of

Hydronephrosis is buildup of urine in kidney due to blockage by the cyst. So apparently yours is draining urine as it should with no blockage by the growth. I don’t think it has anything to do with whether the growth is benign or malignant. Even a kidney stone can cause hydronehprosis.
