in Head and Neck Cancer #1

Greetings survivors!

This is kelly & I hope everyone is hanging in there!

I'm 18-months + post-treatment & I'm doing extremely well except my voice is getting very very hoarse. 

I was wondering if anyone  knew of anything I can do to strengthen & nurture my vocal cords?  I'm a public speaker and September is going to be busy.

    i don't have any suggestions but I pray your voice gets better.  I know first hand what a struggle it is to have a weak voice.  ask your doctor, maybe he/she will refer you to a speech pathologist.  that may be a good place to start.  good luck.

    Hoarse Voice

    You should see your ENT about that.  It could be nothing, but it could be vocal chord paralisys.  I had this at 6 years out - and mine actually turned out to be another primary cancer.  (I'm 18 months out from that one - and speaking a new way now - and living a good life!)

    With you saying it is getting hoarse that meant it was not before. I am by no means a doctor, but I have no vocal cords as I had to have a Laryngectomy due to my cancer. I would recoment sever things. First record your voice. You may want it for later, to compair with. 2nd let your ENT know this has happened as it might only be you have strained them, and they need rest to heal. It could be something serious and needs to be looked at, soon. If it turns out it is strained and nothing very serious, get a referal and see a good SLP [Speach Language Pathologist] who can help with getting your voice back and strong again. For now speak softly [no need for the big stick] and try not to strain it. I have been told warm honey with some tea can soothe and help. Wishing you the best.

    If it has been awhile since you had a scope at the ENT, I would get in there to have it checked out. Likely nothing down there but sure better to know than earleir than later Good luck. Don

    F&C,

    I had speech therapy where I learned    a host of exercises which made  dramatic improvements.
