Work for a cancer non-profit
Does anyone here work for a cancer-related non-profit group or know someone who does? I ask because I'd like to learn more about what it's like to work for such a non-profit. I'm interested in working at least part-time to use my skills to help others with cancer. I don't have any medical training, so there really isn't much I could do in a hospital aside from patient navigation, and I am investigating that possibilty as well.
Presently, I don't know much about how these non-profit groups are organized or if there would even be a place for someone with my particular skills, so I hope to find a few people with inside knowledge that I can interview by phone or email to learn more.
If you have knowledge of cancer non-profits (I suppose I should limit this to American ones) or know of someone who does and you're willing to share contact information, please let me know.
Thank you.
John

Great thought
It is wonderful that you want to share your talents in this way.
Here is a list of the non-profits which participate in the Step up to cancer organization:

In this list you may find one or more that have need of volunteers with your skills. In fact you may want to even contact Step up to cancer directly.
Thank you for your generous spirit.

Thank you, Marie. I appreciate the list and contact info for Step Up for Cancer. I recently contacted Immerman Angels about volunteering with them, but I'd also like to know about actually doing paid work for a cancer non-profit. So far I'm having a hard time finding anyone with knowledge of this.

Perhaps your local hospital or oncologist might have some contacts or suggestions. It may be you could be a patient advocate for them or they may know of other organizations who could use your skillls.
Good luck.

Thanks, Marie. I've talked at length with the lung and prostate patient navigator at my hospital about this. She has given me a lot of material on programs that are available to train to become a patient navigator. I might consider that option, but frankly one-to-one counseling doesn't call on my best talents, which are writing and public speaking. I'd like to find a group that includes outreach and education in its mission. I may be in search of a pink unicorn, but it's worth a try.
