Breast Cancer Society charged with fraud!
Just heard on TV that The Breast Cancer Society has been charged with fraud by all 50 states and the federal government. Seems they only spent about 1% of the monies raised on what they were supposed to.

HUGE cancer charity fraud scam
The Cancer Fund of America (Knoxville,TN) and its affiliated Cancer Support Services; The Breast Cancer Society (Mesa,AZ); and The Children's Cancer Fund of America (Powell,TN) are all involved in this FTC regulatory action. As of right now this is not a criminal action. I expect it will be in the not so distant future. This is one of the largest charity fraud cases in history and involves all 50 states. By agreement with the FTC the organizations have been shuttered. It involves members of one extended family and $187 million. It is truly unbelievable the depths to which some people will sink.

I hope so GlowMore because to
I hope so GlowMore because to be honest I don't trust any of them. Disgraceful and disgusting. People should go to prison for this fraud but I doubt that will happen......... We only give to The Red Cross.

I donate things now to a local Food Bank, Good Will and my Church, but mostly have to stick with the 'Charity begins at Home' adage since I'm not working and am living on Social Security.
I know the Red Cross does good work, but once I saw the salaries of some of the people that run it, just did not donate to them any longer (back when I was working). Maybe that has changed. Agree with you all about how disgraceful this Cancer Fraud is and I hope they are all put in prison.
This is from a RED Cross Statement: "The president and CEO of the American Red Cross is Gail McGovern, and her base salary has remained $500,000—without any pay increase—since she joined the American Red Cross in 2008. This is considered well within the range for executives of large non-profits like the Red Cross, a $3.3 billion organization," ....And perhaps they think $500K is good...but I think it is terrible....this organization could be well run by a retired executive who wanted to DONATE his or her time in my opinion.

I do donate my time and money through my Church and to those I personally know that can use a bit of help. I do give some to USO and next month will be taking a 'bunch' of cans when I do the Crazy Horse Memorial Volksmarch - to not pay cash for the parking, they will accept 3 cans per person for the Food Bank - so I take a bag full.
I refuse to donate anything to Red Cross. They do have good 'hype' and do a lot when they get publicity BUT - - -. Spent too many years involved in one way or another military in my life and 'they' were NEVER there or garbled emergency messages that had to be sent to deployed (days before cells) through them. The last was during Desert Storm. I was told that Drs did not think Son would survive and to get his Dad home (he was on a carrier in Persian Gulf). I contacted the 'local yokel' RC and they told me that there was no way to do that - B*// S#'!. I had his head Dr call and she was told the same thing. I contacted ones who were rather high up with the local RC and a message was sent (as it should have been to start). It was not too long after that, I got a MARS call from Hubby while he was in his CO's office with a Chaplain there too. They could not get him off the carrier for at least 12 hrs. Son did rally and Hubby was able to get another MARS call through just before leaving the carrier - he did not fly home but fulfilled his duty as Son was no longer expected to die. 2+ months later thisSons were able to fly to Hawaii to come home on the Tiger Cruise with Hubby and I met the 3 on the pier in San Diego. I could go on and on with things I personally know about/experienced - not 'something' I 'heard about'.

500K is base salary. It came out that after 911 she got a 2.8 MILLION dollar bonus for doing such a good job! Every diaster each gets huge bonuses for being there for the people.. I'm "the people" and don't like it nor will give money to it.

I have taken great interest
I have taken great interest in The Red Cross statements and will pass this on to my hubby who has always supported them. He may need to re think about donations. I believe one of the things he liked about them came from way, way back after The Second World War (in Britain) where they were very active with helping troops and when they helped later with long term 'striking'' families in need, trying for a better wage and quality of life. Both these events affected his parents lives. Perhaps they have become 'stale' over the years and greedy as seems generally the norm now. Great to donate locally but we need someone we can trust to help globally, the world is such a mess.

This sort of stuff makes me crazy. My phone seems to ring all the time with folks asking for donations for this and that. I did the MS walk last year and now I am bombarded with requests for money via email and regular mail. They have spent more money trying to get me to give them more than I actually gave them. My mother died from MS so I have a true passion for helping folks with the disease. The thing is, there are so many worthwhile places to donate money and any money that I donate, I do in good faith, but it does make you wonder just what or who you're donating to. I don't know what the answer is for this, we have become a nation of incredibily self centered people - and NO ONE, I mean no one, deserves to make that kind of money and have those kind of bonuses! What on earth makes her smarter than the struggling single mother making $15/hour? WHY is she worth more? Oh, she made money for the organization . . . .gimme a break. If the money we donated actually went to the cause we want to support, instead of the CEO's and others who run the organization (I realize there is a need for people to run organizations and have no problem with reasonable salaries and expenses) then the causes we support might actually make progress. And as much as I hate this, waaaaaay too many people profit from all of the pink crap and waaaaaay too little is available for what we actually think we're donating to.
Off my soapbox. Nighty night.
