Diarreah....
I have had diarreah, mucus discharge, bleeding and surprises that soiled my pants. NOTHING seemed to help. My cousin suggested (strongly) that I try a low carb diet. Almost Atkins. I rolled my eyes, then decided to give it a try! It works!!! (At least for me). I was worried about constipation and I haven't had any problems with it and I am at the end of week three. No accidents, no irritated bowels to cause mucus. Will it work long term? I can only hope!
I would not try this without at least letting your doctor know, and maybe getting him/her to work with you. It has been a blessing for me! (PS my cousin is a doctor and luckily he is working with me on this.)
just for you info..
The first week is hard....no candy, bread, deserts or other high carb foods...

Low carb diet
I have been on and off a low carb diet for many years and always feel so much better when I am on it; unfortunately, I have a terrible carb addiction and invariably some event (or holiday) will throw me off for awhile! It really is hard to get back on it, but, over the years, I have noticed that I have very little gas (or constipation!) when I follow it closely! I hope it will continue to work for you, and I'm glad to see it is good for these issues as I am sure I will be headed that way eventually! Good luck!

I'm glad this adjustment in your diet is working for you. You will likely lose weight on it, so don't let yourself get too thin. The one thing I dislike about eating low carb is the lack of energy. I am a carb-a-holic. However, for me, it doesn't seem to have an effect on my weght. I believe I suffer from malabsorption syndrome now. Good luck with your new regimen--I hope it continues to work for you.

Hi Martha - Are you doing anything for the malabsorption? I ask because I think I may have the same thing. Can't seem to gain any weight! Down to about 90 pounds - feel good, and I'm only 5 feet tall with a very small frame - so it doesn't appear to be anything terribly wrong, but I wish I could gain at least a few pounds.

I'm going to try it because those problems you address are all too familiar. What does your days menu look like?
Breakfast is usually two eggs and two pieces of bacon, or gam, or sausage
lunch.. Chicken salad or Cobb salad ...
Supper.. Stir fry or small steak and veggies, pork chop and veggies
substitute pork rinds for crackers or bread
keep boiled eggs in fridge for snacks; or a piece of hard cheese
the first week was TOUGH! I wanted sugar anyway I could get it! Had to stay busy. Also a cup of hot coffee with whole cream works wonders mid afternoon.. Decaf for afternoon.... simple, basic stuff. My cousin wants a more varied menu for me and in a week or two will try to expand menu.... Good luck!

I do not gain weight--maybe just a pound or two if I eat enough, but then I lose it right away. I just don't think my body is absorbing certain things anymore, such as fats. If I eat some kind of high-fat food, my stools become very loose and greasy (sorry if that's TMI!). It's like the fat goes right through me without absorbing. I also suffer from intestinal blockages, as you may remember, and had another one on Wednesday night. My intestines are not happy these days! I'm not sure what they can do for the malabsorption issues. I'm also not sure anymore what to eat to avoid obstructions. My guts are a mess! LOL! I'll see if I can find any good information about malabsorption and post it here if I do.

Thanks Martha. I'm sorry you're dealing with yet more blockages. Are you feeling any better? I have an appointment with my PCP in May and plan on asking him about malabsorption - will let you know what he says.

Thanks for this info Martha. I just read through it and I hope that neither you nor Rose are suffering from it as it sounds nasty and complicated to fix - yet another gift from radiation.

Thanks. I do believe I suffer from it, although sometimes worse than other times. I think a lot of it has to do with what I eat. If things do not improve, I am probably going to consult a gastroenterologist. I am hoping that everyone will take a look at the website just to know the signs and symptoms.
