Re-occurrence

in Kidney Cancer #1

I am getting set for a biopsy to determine if my renal cell cancer has matasisized.  The doctors are 90 percent sure that it is back. They found anodule on my right lung in August and they just did a scan the week of Christmas eve to see if the nodule grew, not only did it grow but five more grew as well.  They have to have a specialist due the biopsy because the largest nodule that is ready to biopsy is butted up against my pulmanary artery, there is fear of puncturing the artery.  He said that if they are right all they can do is extend my life out some, (that sucks) I am not even scared at this point  have mentally prepared for the worst, but what I am wondering is if anyone else has had this happend and how long they have been around.  Also I keep getting information from friends and family about hemp oil any thoughts?

    Mets to lung

    My neighbor Faye's initial diagnosis was from a chest xray at age 64 showing mets to the lung. From that they determined that she had RCC and they did a neph. I am not sure what they did for her lung mets. She is 84 now.

    I may not be able to give you the information or experience you are looking for, but I swear I hear Fox and Neil's voices say get another opinion. Yes, these docs may be giving you the cold, hard facts, but trust me, NO ONE knows when our times is going to end. Of course they have their educated guesses..but spiritually speaking.. there is a plan! Yet it must be hard to think straight about all this, right, Mark?

    Know that I worked in hospice and I am a very spiritual (not religious) person. There is more work to do, and things we go through, before its our time.

    I hope others come here to help you more than I can. I do. Are you on any other forums, like Patients like me?

    No matter what I hope you have family and friends to support you. Do you? How are they coping?

    We too will walk this journey along side you, Mark, if you want us to. I personally will make myself available.. if you want to direct message sometime.

    Hi Mark,

    I am sorry to hear what you are going through. I know where you are coming from, a few months after my initial partial early last year,three new tumours appeared in the same kidney, cancer in my lymph and mets to my lungs, I have around twenty. The lymph in between my lungs in the upper chest cavity is my worst problem and in an area which would be unsafe to operate. I told my Oncologist I don't want a time line and we are not to discuss it. I am prepared to die but working to live, none of us know how long we have, having cancer I feel doesn't single me out to be treated any differently as far as this is concerned. I have been on Votrient since March this year and all the tumours and lung mets have stabilised, so don't lose hope.

    I know something about hemp oil if you want to message me!

    Sorry to hear about the recurrence. In another thread, you said " When I was diagnosed with RCC it was because I had the worst back pain in my life and they found two tumors on my kidney."  How large were your tumors?  How was your biopsy report after surgery?

    I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. But I really think you need to get another opinion. SO many here on this forum have been in the same boat as you and are still fighting the fight. Go to an oncologist who specializes in Kidney cancer for a second opinion, please!

    May I ask when your kidney cancer was diagnosed, and what was found at that time when they removed your kidney?

    February 2013

    The tumors were 8 cm and 3 my doctor is an oncologist who specializes in this.  The biopsy is going to be final confirmation of their suspicion.  They felt that there was no cancer anywhere else but that was at the time of kidney removal.

    Mark when I say this I am referring to a new procedure or a new drug. Three years ago I had several lung mets, the largest two being 7 and 5 cm. I started on a trial med which is now approved called nivolumab. These two mets are now 1.8 and 1.4 cm. I have been fighting this awful cancer since June 2007. I have been very blessed because my entire tumor load has been reduced 77%

    I will look into that.  Are you able to work, this is a big concern for me I am a teacher and I enjoy teaching but I want to be in an effective teacher.  I don't want to go into work sick all the time or be gone a lot because I am not feeling well at all, this would be unfair to my students.

    Teaching

    I returned to work teaching a 1/2 day in March 2014, 4 months after IL2 treatment. I started back fulltime in August. Probably any other job I could have managed, but I was exhausted after 4 days. I got one of those fitbit monitors and it turns out that in an average day of teaching I would cover over 10 miles walking!

    Fortunately most of the school board (those that know me) have been very helpful and accomodating  and I have returned to teaching 1/2 day 5 days a week and slowly extending my hours as a I can.

    Teaching is a great job, but stressfull and challenging. I would hate not to be able to work, and would hate to shortchange my students, but from here on I will make sure that I push myself without over-reaching myself.
