Unexpected Visit W/Oncologist (update 11/26/14)

edited November 2014 in Colorectal Cancer #1

Been having odd symptoms.  Called the Oncologist's nurse and had to make a trip in to see the Oncologist today.  Been having abdominal discomfort, bloating, unexplained rapid weight gain, (over 10 lbs in three weeks) and uncommon upper spine, neck and chest pains with deep breaths.  I tried to hold out for the scheduled appointment that is coming up; really got anxious.  He wasn't to pleased to see me since we had a scheduled appointment in three weeks and there was no sign of a blockage.

We thought we had this whooped; and still may have.

I hope that it is nothing.  But, can't help think it is a recurrence.

Thanks for taking time to read,

Art

    Don't you hate that that's

Don't you hate that that's how we live now? It used to be 'oh, maybe I'm getting the flu' or 'that's odd' now it's 'is my cancer coming back?' It pisses me off. Sorry for being crude but I detest the way we have to look at life now. I'm just angry these days, sorry. Every time I see someone new on here I'm angry for them. Damned cancer.

    To True

    Jan,

You are so right...don't know about you but i cringe at every new ache or pain.

I won't be embarassed if there is no finding from the CT tomorrow...peace of mind is part of quality of life for me.

    Thanks again Jan, Art

    I hope it's nothing

I can't help but feel appalled that your doctor would make you feel that way! It's bad enough that you're dealing with cancer, you shouldn't feel bad that you're inconveniencing the doctor ahead of schedule. You and everyone else with cancer have to be your own advocate and watch out for yourself. Don't feel bad that you're being proactive! I really hope it's nothing and you're just being cautious!

    Thanks Lin

Thanks Lin...I was somewhat sad at his attitude.  He was busy and behind but even though it was not an emergency to him I was obviously concerned enough to call his nurse.  Thanks again for the supporting comment Lin.  Art

    I have had similar issues

I have had similar issues over the past 5 months. Just when it seems to come and go. Nothing new has shown up on my scans so we attribute it to long term side effects from radiation/chemo.

    Always be safer then sorry

shame on the Doc for not being pleased, our bodies,we pretty much know them, and docs need to listen a little more and better, what if his displeasure causes someone not to come in right away cause they don't want to face his attitude and then they die.  You do what you need to do and I'm glad that you did.

But I hope it isn't for a cancer reason but maybe an infection of some sort that can be dealt with or any other myriad things.

Let us know what's going on when you find out please.

    Are you kidding

    Are you kidding me?

    Unnecessary and unprofessional.

Will you be looking for a new oncologist?

Wonder how he would feel ... ya know .. with the Holiday's around the corner and all.

This just sorta rubs me the wrong way.

So, that warning we all get in our lectures, "If you have any changes, dizzy, short of breath, in pain, sudden weight loss/gain, loss of appetite", blah blah is for what exactly??  Mine always ended with call and/or see your doctor immediately.

I am sorry you have to deal with that on top of your new stressor.  Wishing you the best of news only .. fingers crossed for you.

    CT Results

Thanks to all for the kind replies to the initial post!!

Results of CT were predomantly unremarkable with an incremental increase in Lung nodule as well as an enlarged Periaortic node.  Nothing requiring immediate attention.  Scheduled to see Oncologist December to further review and get his spin, also, discuss Radiologist's noted changes.  The Regional Med Cen we use releases reports to the patient as a routine matter which I find refreshing.

Wishing all the best Thanksgiving (for those in US) possible, and, once again thanks for the support.

    Well, that sounds encouraging!

Incremental is a good word in these circumstances.

Did they have any idea what might be causing the symptoms?  And have those improved?

Yes the symptoms have improved abd seemingly lost 5 pounds very quickly with no change to diet or exercise.  Still waiting to see if the last 6 pouds will fall off as well.

Thanks again for the kind replies. and yes Sue I plan to relax and enjoy Thanksgiving.

I'm so glad you can sit down to Thanksgiving dinner and not be stressed like crazy wondering if they were going to find tumors.  I hope the weight loss turns into merely the body having a little fluxation.

    Happy Thanksgiving Art.

    Yay!

glad there's nothing to worry about. I think cancer patients and their families are always sitting on pins and needles waiting for the next shoe to drop. My brother's CT showed a slight increase in 2 lung nodules, but he was off chemo meds for 5-6 weeks. We'll see if the irinotecan helps at all. best wishes!
