With so many reports here of folks struggling with constricted or closed throats and now living with PEG for the long haul, I saw this post about a very new experimental treatment that might offer hope to restore swallowing. Click

    Thank you

    Don,

Thank you for continuing your research.  As I told Tim, sometimes I don't want to open a post for fear I will get that side effect.  You are looking out for all of us and it is appreciated.

thank you, Don.  that is very encouraging.  There are several here that either have trouble swallowing or cannot swallow at all so this was really good to see.

    Thanks Don............. :)

Thanks Don that is really great news for so many. There is so much hope in the future and some is happing right now.

Stanford has found a way to stop some cancer from  spreading:  A team of Stanford researchers has developed a protein therapy that disrupts the process that causes cancer cells to break away from original tumor sites, travel through the bloodstream and start aggressive new growths elsewhere in the body. The future is looking better al the time.

    Magnets

this is very interesting, I'm waiting for a double endosopy on my throat ...up and down....I'm wondering if they removed the magnets..wouldn't want to go in a MRI scanner with magnets in my throat....I also wonder what would have happened if the magnets came loose, would you choke or maybe get an obstruction in the bowel. Sounds good but early days yet.

    Magnets

    Hi Don:

Many thanks for posting the link - there are a couple of people in our group who have recurring problems with strictures and difficulty swallowing. Is there any further information or documentation available? The discussion only states that magnets were placed in the esophagus. Don't completely understand.
Where was this procedure done? Can you get the doc's name? I realize you weren't the originator of the post...

Any additional guidance or info would be greatly appreciated!

I asked for more detail but I do see it seems to have been performed in Canada. I'll post more if/as I receive any. Don

    Hi Don

That is wonderful, it might work on many others and maybe on me. My problems are a little different but who knows, I am glad that there are still doctors who are willing to try something new. Thanks again

    Magnets, cont'd

    Hi Don:

Thanks for the followup - I also posted to that discussion group to see if I can get any more info. Couldn't find anything online.

The only thing that I can guess is somehow using approved (foodgrade?) magnets and insert them on opposite sides of the esophagus but similar poles face - ie north facing north. This way they repel each other and thereby keeping the "tube" open. Seems logical and quite a leap in insight. If this works, it would be a tremendous innovation.

    Hope to hear more!

    Details

I have some information about the procedure. This is VERY new yet promising.

Magnets are a non-invasive way of opening up an esophagus blocked by strictures. The esophagus needs further dilatation to open it up more.

Toronto General Hospital in Toronto, Dr. Eran Shlomovitz (general surgeon/interventional radiologist)

    Not published yet.

Thanks for the update, Don! I've forwarded the info on to my fellow survivor!

    I TRIED ONCE

After Bilateral Neck Radiation, it never worked for me. Took some time, but I can eat pretty much whatever I want. Not having any saliva, due to the radiation, the only time I have swallowing issues, if I really enjoy something I'm eating, I get in too big of a hurry and choke.
