Soreness in Nipple
Some time ago my urologist put me on Avodart to help with the prostate woes, I have gleason 6 and am on active surveilance. One day three weeks I accidently pushed in my left nipple while in the shower, it hurt like hell, also noticed soreness to the right side of the breast. I had an appointment with my GP a couple of days later and he said that this is common with avodart and he took me off it. Well here we are 3 weeks later and the soreness has not gone, it is better than it was but still there. Looked it up on the internet and it says this is a side effect of avodart. It also said that avodart has a half life of six months, has anybody else seen or heard of this? Denis

Dear Denis,
I've read thatDear Denis,
I've read that among a small number there are side effects from Avodart, sexual impotence, enlarged breasts, so discontinuing the drug is appropriate. I am unable to comment on how long it will take for the effects of the drug to leave your system. I think that one of your doctors can give the answer to your question.
By the way, please refresh my memory, do you have an enlarged prostate?

In a clinical study about 1% of the patients reported breast tenderness or enlargement. Unfortunately, you appear to be in that group. I was also unable to find a quick answer to how long this side effect will last. As hopeful and optimistic wrote, your physician should be able to tell you.

Yes I have an enlarged prostate, have had for many years, my psa was always in the 5's going back to 1999, when the prostate got more troublesome the urologist decided we should do a biopsy. This was in June of last year. Biopsy showed a gleason 6, two out of 12 cores were positive, one at 40% and one at 15%. I am now 71 years old. When he put me on Avodart, it did improve the function and the PSA went down to 2.5, this happens with avodart. My family doctor was the one that pointed out the breast thing. I called my urologist who said stop taking the avodart. Yesterday he verified that the half life is 6 months. I can get rid of the soreness in the nipple and side of breast with IcyHot cream. If I take a bath and immerse my upper body the warm water relieves it. I have another biopsy in two weeks, so we will see. Denis
