Night sweats post-op anyone?

Hi, I am now 4 weeks post-op and things are slowly returning to normal. I am now back at work part time and "normal" life is resuming. Pain is 90% gone, so i am off pain medicine since 1 week.

The thing bothering me are those heavy night sweats. I was blaming it on pain drugs, but it keeps happening even without it. Anyone experienced that post-op?

Thanks again for your precious answers

Dave

    Hi Dave

I've always had night sweats after my surgeries, this year was the worst. The doctors said it had nothing to do with my surgery (I've been told it's hormones or medication or whatnot) but I find it too much of a coincidence that it's happened with all my surgeries. I would ask your doctor about it, though.

    Best Wishes,

    Rae

    Post-Op Night Sweats!

    Hi Dave,

I have been told that it's the bodies way of expelling the drugs, particularly the anaesthetic. I have always put it down to the workings of the immune system, as it heals and gradually reduces the inflammation. I have had that problem after each op, the duration seems to vary.

    And I've understood

that the night sweats were part of our bodies attempt to ramp up our metabolism to help us heal faster. It happens at night when there is less competition from our normal daily functional metabolism. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. That's what we used to tell people in the hospital anyway.

Honestly not sure if not just my age

I had very few of them before surgery (March), but since then...lots and lots.  BUT I am also 53, so mine could be related to hormones.

Sigh.  And they NEVER come when I am freezing cold!

    Sometimes a sweaty night.

Never been able to pin down a reason.

    From the Mayo Clinic.

Medications that can cause night sweats

Night sweats are a common side effect of many medications, such as:

    1. Depression medications (antidepressants)
    2. Drugs used to regulate your hormones (hormone therapy)
    3. Drugs that lower the level of sugar in your blood (hypoglycemic agents)

Medical conditions that can cause night sweats

Diseases and conditions that can cause night sweats include:

    1. Anxiety
    2. Autonomic neuropathy (damage to your autonomic nerves)
    3. Brucellosis (a bacterial infection)
    4. Carcinoid syndrome (a syndrome resulting from a certain type of cancerous tumor)
    5. Endocarditis (an infection of your heart lining)
    6. HIV/AIDS
    7. Hodgkin's lymphoma (Hodgkin's disease)
    8. Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
    9. Leukemia
    10. Menopause
    11. Myelofibrosis (a bone marrow disorder)
    12. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
    13. Osteomyelitis (a bone infection)
    14. Pheochromocytoma (a rare adrenal gland tumor)
    15. Pyogenic abscess (a pus-filled cavity caused by an infection)
    16. Sleep disorders (such as obstructive sleep apnea)
    17. Stroke
    18. Syringomyelia (a fluid-filled cyst in the spinal cord)

    Night sweats

Hey Dave, my surgery was 11 months ago and I almost forgot about the night sweats. (Thanks for reminding me) I was geting night sweats so bad that I would get up and change my t-shirt and sometimes my sheets. My pillow used to get soaked. I wasn't really having much pain and didn't seem to have a fever, it was just a little annoying getting up soaking wet every night. In any event, they will start to go away. I never did figure it out but it will work itself out. Good luck, hang in there, time heals.
