FallWinter -Are you ready?
As 'Fall has Fell, (in some areas) are you ready? And what do you do to be prepared?
We got our first blizzard last year the first of Oct. We were without electric power for 8 days. I was prepared for all but one thing I never thought about.
For heat have a good keorseene heater, lots of antique kero lamps, large pantry, water jugs, plenty of,warm clothes. Thee one thing I didnt think about was charging my phone. If you have a 'jump box' (for.'jumping'a dead car batttery) - it has a port you can plug into and chage as if you were in your car.
So what do you do to be prepared for winter tthat might be something that others may not have thought about using.
If you have jump box - be sure to bring it in and have it fully charged.
Don't forget to be sure to have plenty of food, water and needed meds on hand for 4 legged family. Be sure large 'family' (horses, etc,) has adequet protection from the wind chill and plenty of hay because it could take longer than you think to get back to them and full belly helps stay warm.
Remember - if you are a camper, you can use camping gear for survival situtations.
I'm sure others have other ideas/tips.

I'm in North Florida girls and yesterday was the first day I could open my windows....(it dropped into the 70s) Today windows are closed...gonna get hot again but not as hot as usual 'they' say. Rague sounds like you are in Colorado or somewhere out west with the survival advice about the animals. I've lived all over and remember those bad winters well....both out West and up North. I do miss the change of seasons.

I'm not in CO but farther north - I'm in western SOUTH Dakota. Actually on the prarie justt NE of the 'Beautiful Black Hills of Dakota' - can see them from home. I have lived in many States in my life. Daddy was Army when I was born but went to the USAF when it was formed so did live lots of places as a child, was Army myself and Hubby is retired Navy - so yeah, I've lived in quite a few States and France. All in the South (FL, GA, AL, KY) and the West (OK, TX, UT, AZ, CA, WA, SD) Have lived in different places in several of those States. As a native Floridian, Florida was always 'home' and Daddy was successful in getting stationed in FL more than 1/2 his military time. Mom's family was from N FL for many generations. Daddy's family had gone into KY when it was originally settled but his grandndparents had started wintering in Trabue (now Punta Gorda) in the 1880's and his parents moved there full time in the early 1920's. Hubby family didn't come to the Tampa Bay area til in the 1950's. I've lived in Tampa, Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, Cape Canaveral, Jax. and of course Punta Gorda. Hubby was stationed at NAS Cecil Field and NAS Jax (both in/near Jacksonville) where both Sons were born.
This has been a crazy year weatherwise here. We've already had 'laying snow' and killing frost. Today it's to be in the low 90's -AC is already running. This summer is the 6th coldest on record (have only been in the 90's for 6 days while we usually get that many 100 or higher) and the 2nd wettest on record. We did need the moisture after years of drought.
Not only do outdoor 'family' need to be prepared for cold weather but everywhere - even SW FL. Way back when I was little, we got a really bad cold front through with freezing rain and really bad wind chills. We lost several head of cows to the conditions even with everything possible done. Obviously, we didn't have issues getting to them (no feet of snow). So I learned early on what can happen and over the years in other areas learned a lot more for how to try to ensure survival of my/our outdoor family.
The leaves are definately changing rapidly. Monday I'll be doing the Volksmarch at Crazy Horse Memorial. I've done many of the Spring ones but this is only the second one done in the Fall so really looking forward to doing it in the beautiful colors. (It's only a little more than an hr drive from here.)
Hoping to hear what others do to prepare for 'survival' plans.

How in the world did you end up in South Dakota? Are you going to retire there? I think we need to start a Topic of maybe who can top who on where we have lived or visited...giggle I didn't live in France but we did live for almost 3 years in Mexico once while they were building their first Nuclear Power Plant in Vera Cruz. I'm doing the Survival Dance now just one day at a time but don't plan to move out of Florida.....well....unless maybe to a cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

We have started to prepare. Screens put away. Flannel sheets on the bed -- fleece comes later. Tires good. Warm-weather clothes put away, except for a few things for Indian Summer. Wore capris, short sleeves, and sandals today.

Will try to make a some what longish story shorter. Late 1990, Hubby deployed to the Persian Gulf. Winter hit the NW hard and I decided to take the Boys and go to Punta Gorda til he was back. That was a huge culture shock from what it had been. Not the place any more I grew up in/knew/loved. Hubby came 'home' in June with a months leave and then back to WA we went. 1994 comes around so it was getting time to start deciding where to go when he retired Navy. Based on what FL had become (also all parents there deceased) we were not going back 'home'. Drugs and problems with 'A' gangs becoming common on the Island we didn't want,to stay on. The Island with then 15 and 16 y/o Sons. On trips back and forth to FL, had been through the Back Hills so it seemed like good place to go.
Daddy was USAF and most of his Squardron was sent to Korea but some were sent to France. So we spent the Korean War in France.),

That is a beautiful part of the country..... I've live in New England twice...to the East of you.....first in the 70s in the New London area....my husband's compbany (Bechtel Corp) was building two Nuclear Power Plants there .......and then about twenty years later we were there in the Fairfield, Ct area...actually Oxford, Ct....working for another company. CT is so beautiful this time of year...but too much snow in winter...as you gals get........I've had it with snow and love it her in Florida near the St Johns River Still using the A/C but we will be cooling down soon I'm sure.

Don't know if Whitey's is still there on the St Johns but they have/had scrumptious cat fish.' I could really 'pig out' on the 'all you can eat'! Now, I just 'pig out' on prime rib at Silverado in Deadwood when we go up.

getting ready for winter
I live in mid-Michigan. It gets really cold here in the winter and last year we had a lot of snow. We have a wood burning stove for heat in addition to our household heater that uses propane. It's cheaper to use the wood stove though so we will soon be getting some loads of firewood so that we will have enough to keep us warm all winter.
Also if you live in an area where it gets cold you should always keep blankets, water and non-perishable food in your car in case you get stuck somewhere. I always keep my zero degree sleeping bag in my trunk. Also it's probably a good idea to keep some of those hand warmers too. Also my dad made me a little fire tin. He used an old cleaned out small paint can. then you take a roll of toilet paper and soak it insome kind of flammable oil and keep the lid tight and in your car. then if you get stuck somewhere you can open it and light it for warmth, just make sure you crack your window a little so you don't suffocate or die of CO2 poisoning.
