Tamoxifen

My situation is a little different from yours, in that my period has never stopped.  I was diagnosed in 2009 at age 40, and kept getting my periods right through treatment, including chemo (Yes, lucky me! )

I'm now 45, and have been on Tamoxifen for nearly 5 years.  With the new research, my oncologist now advises most of his patients to stay on Tamoxifen for 10 years, so I'll be taking it for 10 years total.  

Tamoxifen has had absolutely no effect at all on my period -- Aunt Flo comes every month regular like the moon, and my period is pretty much the same in duration, flow, etc. as it's always been.

I also see my gynecologist religiously every year for an exam, and she feels that so far Tamoxifen hasn't affected anything that she can see, either.

Interesting that you never had any trouble with your cycle. Well I guess i just have to get used to it again. I had to ask my teenage daughter for emergency supplies lol !!

Oh no -- you had to go begging supplies from your teenage daughter?!  How embarrassing!  Is she ever going to let you live that down?

I was on Tamoxifen for seven years from age 40 to 48 (or so).

I was premenopausal when I began Tamoxifen.

About six months or so later my periods stopped.

But every few months (maybe twice or three times a year)

I would have a period. 

Sometimes it was hardly anything and other times a flood!

I then switched from Tamoxifen to another drug called Megase

for five years

for a new 'flare up' of cancer and had no more periods after that.

Thank you for your answer. It seems I had a regular period after all and who knows if it will happen again? It kinda blows my mind that it took 2 years for the chemo meds to leave my body enough for a period to be possible. Your experience makes me feel more "normal". It's so reassuring to hear from women who have been on this site for a long time, so I really appreciate the advice...

I know you asked about tamoxifen and our periods.......and since I'm Triple Negative the Tamoxifen was not available to me.....and as for the Periods?   I'm 78 ....and can dimly remember how it was to have them.   I'm just here to say I hope it will be better for you and to tell everyone reading this to go and read Zahalene's Page..........  Zahalene You Rock***  She lays it out and says it like it is.        Much love to all....  Glo

i was on tamoxifen about 2 1/2 yrs post meno and started bleeding-i had been check every 4 mths for enlarge uterus followed by a D & C each time-I did have a very enlarge uterus and had a total hystectomy and con't my tamoxifen for 2 more years.

zahalene can you tell us that haven't had them show up yet what the first signs are for the bone mets?

I ache all over all the time and have noticed that a few bruises just are NOT going away...have one on front of my left leg that has been there for over a year now.   I googled it and it says maybe something 'serious'...HAH...   doc doesn't seem concerned but haven't had a bone scan now in over two years and was just wondering if you had anything stand out..   HATE it that you got the mets........
