swallen stomach

I had another question sorry things just keep popping in my head. trying to get a sense of it all.. My stomach feels and looks swallen.. every time i eat or drink something my stomach expands. and then hurts soon after i eat or drink. Does anyone know if this is also related to the kidney cancer?

Mad,

While this is normal after surgery it seems unusual before surgery. Ask your GP or surgeon.

Thank you I wasnt sure.. I have made a list of my concerns and trying to think of questions to ask my urologist. on Tuesday...

Issue Resolved?

Just wondering if you found out what was causing this. My husband was experiencing something similar where he complained of feeling pressure and bloated before surgery. The doctors said it was from the size of the tumor (about 15 cm). It continued after surgery and he was told it was from constipation. Last weekend he was admitted to the hospital for low white blood cell count and fever and had 2.8 L of fluid drained off his abdomen and has since had another 2.4L drained. watch it closely and if it continues be persistent with getting the doctors to figure out what is causing it. His surgery was,on May 1st so we are several months post surgery.

From what I can find fluid in the abdomen does not seem to be very common with RCC. I've asked on another board if anyone has experienced it and have not gotten any responses. If anyone here has experienced it I would like to hear more about it.

I HAVENT BEEN BACK TO THE DRS. THIS PAIN HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE DECEMBER, I WAS ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL THEN WITH POSSIBLE GALL BLADDER THEY WERE GOING TO REMOVE BUT THEN SURGEON SAID HE DIDNT THINK THAT WAS THE MAIN REASON FOR MY PAIN.. BUT TILL THIS DAY I AM IN CONSTANT PAIN EVERY TIME I EAT MY GALL BLADDER ONLY FUNCTIONS AT 8% SO ITS NOT WORKING ANYWAYS SO NOT SURE WHY HE JUST DIDNT REMOVE IT..

Ascites

or a formal name for fluid in the abdomen. It's not necessarily a normal side effect, but is not uncommon in any type of abdominal surgery. Fluid is leaking out of the cells and lymph system and filling the empty spaces around the intestines and other organs in the abdomen. Until the cause is addressed, or medication can reduse the cause, the only answer is to have it drained.

And Nano, thanx for addressing "all caps".

Fluid In Abdomen

Did your husband have a partial or radial nephrectomy?

One of the complications of partials can be leaking. I have an acquiantance with RCC that had a partial and it kept leaking (urine) into his abdoment for months. He didn't get it resolved until he finally went to another urologist. The first urologist's plan seemed to be waiting hoping it'd heal/stop on its own and it didn't.

I don't know the overall rate of this complication, but as I understand it, it's one of the more common problems with partial nephrectomies.

Ascites after Radical Nephrectomy

My husband had a radical nephrectomy on May 1st. His pathology was Stage IV papillary.

Based on the information I can find this doesn't seem to be a common side effect of RCC at all but but is seen in ovarian cancer. The doctors seem to think the ascites is caused by the cancer. However, it tested non-malignant for cancer cells. Nothing about his cancer seems normal. He's had pressure, pain, discomfort ever since his nephrectomy was done. He probably felt best the two weeks he was on Sutent and Gemcitabine his week off he went down hill and ended up in the hospital on the 4th day of his second cycle. They stopped treatment while in the hospital but we hope to start back next Wednesday. We just got home today after 6 days in the hospital.

NOPE NOT YELLING
