Im tensed for my mom.

in Breast Cancer #1

My mom got a mammogram done in february 2014 and the result was BIRAD-0 and now ,again in august (3 days before) she got a mammogram done once again.But ,sadly this time the result says BIRAD-5.(in left breast).She would be getting a biopsy done tomorrow.Im really tensed if this could be cancerous.Please help.

    My mom too just had a mammogram (her first) and had a biopsy.   I see she was also a Bi-Rad 5.   My mom is 80 years old.

    What is a birad?
    If I dont know, I figure others may not either.

    Bi-Rad

    Bi-Rad is a a type of scoring system that a technician gives to the doctor to assess a suspicious mass or indicate no possible cancerns, etc.   I believe the scoring is from 0 to 6.   It is just an indicator and not fact until a biopsy is done.   So you you have 0-3, it will usually say negative or negative but watch, 4-6 usually requires a biopsy.

    Meaning of Birad 5

    BI-RAD is an acronym for Breast Imaging Reporting and Database System. It was formulated by the American College of Radiology and is used to standardize interpretation of mammograms amongst radiologists. A BI-RAD level of 5 means the following: " Highly suggestive of malignancy. Classic signs of cancer are seen on the mammogram. All category 5 abnormalities typically receive biopsy and if the biopsy results are benign, the abnormality usually receives re-biopsy since the first biopsy may not have sampled the correct area. Depending on how individual radiologists differentiate between category 4 and 5, the percentage of category 5 abnormalities that will be cancer may vary between 75% and 99%."

    This is not the greatest of news but nothing is absolutely certain until you have the biopsy results from the pathology lab. I wish you and your mother the best of luck.

    My mom is doing well.  Her biopsy was positive for IDC.   I just want you to know though that this was her first ever mammogram.  She is 80 years old.   She knew she had a lump several years ago (which she told me about) but said she would watch it and if it changed she would tell me since we do have fibrocystic breasts.   She finally tells me that she can now see the lump visually.   Thats when I told her she needed mammogram so the finding wasn't a surprise.    My mom has a good attitude and we see the surgeon on September 15th.

    Since your mom had a birad of 0 and now a birad of 5, I hope that it is nothing too concerning since it appears they have been keeping a close eye on her.   Was her tumor small?    I will be sending all of my positive thoughts your way.

    Kathy,

    the lump is of 2.3 cms.Could you please tell me what is IDC.?My mom's reports are yet to come and also my parents are not discussing much with me..I'm all the more tensed. :(

    IDC

    Invasive Ductal Carcinoma - which I understand is the most common type.    However, various things can influence the treatment of this.  With regard to my mom, she is HER2 positive and her K1-67 was at 70% and she is slightly ER postive.   These other testings I believe can indicate what type of treatment will be or wont be good for her.  We are still in the learning phase as we haven't spoken to her surgeon yet.   Since my mom waited almost 2 to 3 years from the time she felt the lump, it has now spread to her skin and I believe one lymph node that we know of.   Her main lump is more than 2 cm but less than 5 cm and the skin lesion is about 1 1/2 cm.   She hasn't been staged yet

    Oh, by the way, it is hard getting the reports.   We tried to get the report from the mammogram place but they didn't want to release it.  We had her PCP get the report.   Her PCP also got the pathology report too.   Even when you do get the reports, there is no staging or anything on it.  The mammogram will give you information on lumps and/or denisities and how they did a biopsy or ultrasound and the pathology report will give  you the staining results and other information like whether the tumer is ER or PR positive, triple negative, HER2 positive or negative and other information like that, but you will actually need to meet with  your physician to have it deciphered.

    When will you hear about your mom's biopsy?
