National or International Kidney Cancer Charitable Organization?

Hi everyone,

All these people doing the ALS ice bucket challengs got me thinking about maybe trying to help a medical research organization that I can actually relate to. 

I am already somewhat active in helping out the arts and a local humane society, but since I have recently been forced to care about kidney cancer, I would like to re-direct some of my charitable efforts. 

Are there any national or international organizations that would be good to get involved with? 

Let me know if you know of any.

    Only Two I Know Of

    The Kidney Cancer Association in Chicago is a national organization. http://www.kidneycancer.org

    Then there is the American Cancer Society.

    Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look like it), kidney cancer is not very common. It doesn't get the same attention as other cancers. Research is less and the budgets are smaller. When I tried to donate and earmark money for kidney cancer only at the American Cancer Society, I was told I could not. They only allowed that for the more common cancers.

    What about directly to certain research hospitals/or NIH?

    I was following a blog by a gentleman named Chris Battle. When he passed, his wife posted a link to his hospital (Johns Hopkins).  It might be worth researching prominent hospitals that have dedicated research to kidney cancer and fund directly that way. From what I can tell from the blog, you could actually donate and specifiy the money for kidney cancer.

    National Cancer Institute

    I have no additional information but they are affiliated with the National Institutes of Health. Their website is www.cancer.gov and they funded the study I posted about earlier to day for Chromophobe cancer. This might be of interest to you, although not necessarily kidney specific. If anyone has any additional info please let me know. If I make any charitiable donations, they will be to fund rare cancer research. I think ALS is doing OK with the ice bucket challenge and I"d have no problem saying "Thanks but no thanks, my husband had a rare cancer."

    Great Idea

    Locally here in Los Angeles, Cedars Sinai and City of Hope have kidney cancer programs. I'm sure they would take donations.
