The nuesea can be a side effect of the pain medication. It should subside after you are off the pain medication. In any event address this concern to your surgeon.

I had a partial nephrectomy on Tuesday 7/8/14 (robotic assisted). Clear cell renal cell carcinoma Stage 1. Discharged from hospital 7/9.  While the pain from the surgery was really minimal, I had a low-grade fever, nausea, no appetite, extreme fatigue, etc.  Basically, I felt like I had a really bad flu.  I stopped taking Oxicodone on Saturday (I'd only been taking it at night to help me sleep comfortably) and the "flu" started to subside.  So - 4-5 days post surgery I finally "turned the corner".  However, I had plans to call the surgeon on Monday if things had not improved.

I really think it had to do with the anesthesia.  I had 2 surgeries last year and did not experience this...

Do you have a fever?  If it's over 100.4 (according to my hospital discharge papers), you should definitely call your doc.  Even if there is no fever, you may want to do so anyway just to be on the safe side!!!

Also love the TED Hose.  Nausea seems to go with surgery, for me especially.  First "the purge," Anesthesia, then liquid diet, then a bit of constipation, and the pain meds. Stick to low fats and more liquids than solids, apple juice, 7-Up, Chicken broth, and adequate H2O.  Easier for your body to absorb without a lot of enzymes dumped into the small intestine. Your pancreas sometimes takes a hit from all that happens and can lead to the nausea.

Give yourself a few more days before you call the Dr. Everyone has a variance in recovery time; but we want to have the Dr. give us a firm number of days to bet there. IF---you do start to actually throw up or get the dry heaves, do call the Dr.  That could indicate a mild case of pancreatitis.  Because I had part of my liver and my gall bladder  removed during the first surgery for the nephrectomy, I did develop pancreatitis.  ER hydrated me, sent me home on a liquid diet with anti-nausea pills, and I recovered.

Believe me, you'll recover.  Hang in there and know we're cheering for those good lookin' legs.

I had a open partial in March.

I was so so nauseous that it scared me.  I mean to throw up with 24 staples in my side did NOT sound like something I wanted to do. It also kept me in the hospital for 5 days 8-( 

I finally got them to cut the heavy drugs and I just took Tylenol - and was out of the hospital the next mroning. 

Not saying it will be the same for you, but as Iceman said, the pain meds can be the cause.

Soemtimes the drugs to that.. and sometimes a partial can be worse than a radical.. rare but it happens.. hang in there. the worse is over..!

I agree with Donna...  "Nothing beats a great pair of legs...."

I too had a partial nephrectomy but post op I didn't have any nausea. I was given dylotted (sp?) which maybe has less side effects?! 

Karen, you said you didnt have any pain otherwise?! That's wonderful! I wish I could say the same. I am 3.5 weeks post op and am still struggling with pain near the surgical site; not actually at the site. My biggest area of pain is the right side of my abdomen and sometimes on my back - I'm presuming my kidney healing.

Anyone else still in pain? The doctor says it's normal... I'm impatient!!!

I agree with your surgeon. Your pain is normal. Nobody said the surgery is a cake walk.

Pretty much agreeing that it could be the pain meds (I took tramadol, which bothers me a lot less than the other narcotics, which make me very nauseous), or it could be constipation. Took me 10 days or so to get back to normal, and I had some nausea because of that. Watch your temperature. Anything over 101 and you should contact your doc ASAP (call them, don't wait).

Switching pain meds might help. Tramadol worked well for me. Later Tylenol. The other stuff makes me really nauseous.

Address constipation. Walk. Drink lots of water. Light diet and if you need to (I did), take a softener/something with some push like Senna Plus. I was told to avoid harsh laxatives like milk of magnesia, since that can kick things in the other direction. It takes a while for your digestion to get back to normal.
