Post surgery hernia
During my post surgery follow up appt I asked my surgeon's PA if I had a hernia above my belly button. She told me that it was too soon to have a surgery related hernia because it had only been 1 month. She also said that the hernia risk period is from 3 months post surgery to 6 months. Does anyone know why that period makes sense and would the risk only be at the location of my incisions? It seems like the risk would go down with time instead of having a 3 month period at the beginning with little to no risk. I should have asked my surgeon as well when he came in the room but forgot.

So you have a hernia...
So you have a hernia... sorry but I am not surprized.. several of us warned you about not over doing it and over exercising too soon.., it happens... and doctors typically seem to not want to fix it... Wish someone would of warned me... welcome to the sticking out club...

do you think was correct? Some PA? I've done this a lot more years than she(he). And probably thousands more patients. I hope it is nothing. Because if it is.......

I don't have a hernia. I had some pain but it's gone now. Just wondering why the risk period for hernias starts 3 months after the operation. Actually feeling pretty good now. I asked the question because I do want to ramp up my activity but don't want to get a hernia. I understand that it can take a long time to recover from a hernia. So understanding the physiology of it would be helpful if anyone knows.

Found this kinda quickly

still really no explination as to the time period. Maybe because when "we" feel good enough to ramp up and we do it too fast?
I still have a really "heavy" feeling around the incision site after swimming and my longer runs/bricks. Today is a day off due to I am a bit tender, just a loooong walk with pup and housecleaning (Which is a workout).
Frustrating, I know, to feel so good that we want to romp and such like we used to. Then reality hits 8-(. But we ARE getting there! You will be back to tri. shape soon. 8-).

Laurie thanks for the article. It seems like the risk is due only to the area that was cut through the muscle in order to get into the abdominal cavity to do the surgery. My incisions are very small because I had robot assisted laprascopic surgery -- 5 entry points all less than 1 inch in length. So I'm guessing my risk is minimal but I'll still take it somewhat easy. i have a running related injury that is keeping me from really being able to engage my lower abs anyway. My first Tri is tomorrow. At this point of my recovery (almost 7 wks post op) my first goal is to avoid drowning during the swim and secondly to simply finish.

Sprint Triaamdsi said:Good luck!
Hahahaha! If you can do the first - the second will be a pie e of cake 8-). Full or sprint?
since mine was an open (6" slice) I wonder if that's why a bit more tender - even now. Oh well
good luck, have fun, don't drown 8-)
It's just a sprint. I still have a half ironman in September that I want to do but my orthopedic told me that my running related injury may make that event unlikely. Running was the problem. No problems with biking or swimming.
