My Doctor was a jerk

Hi All.  I just feel like venting.  It has only been a month since I was diagnosed.  I've gone through all cycles of emotions.  I'm finally ready to put the mopping aside and get my war-face on.

I'm going in for a battery of tests tomorrow, and more on Monday.  My first doctor was a real jerk.  While I was waiting for her (for what seemed like hours) I asked for my charts and started to read them.  Imagine my surprised when I read "invasive agressive adenocarcinoma" and other things I can't even type.  I even took a picture of the report and sent to my husband because he wouldn't believe it when I called him.  Had the doctor (or his assistant) called me ahead of time, maybe give me a warning, I wouldn't have been shaking so much.

When my doctor came in, she totally missed my biopsy results because she was convinced the tumor was benign.  In fact when I asked about it, she said "I told your husband the day I removed it that it was benign"  and I asked "is that what the biopsy says?"  of course all the while thinking "maybe I read it wrong!?  why isn't she telling me it was cancer??"

When she finally flipped through the report she said "OMG!!! you have cancer!!??"   "we'll have to cut out part of your colon; c'mon, let me get you set up with the nurse" and she started to walk away......  I called her back in and demanded explanations, answers, etc.  She blew me off and even said "it's not big deal, we do it all the time"

Needless to say I grabbed my charts and reports and walked off.  I am now going to a specialized GI/Oncologist/Surgeon team.

Here is to hoping I'll have a plan of attack soon; whatever it may be.  I've read several stories in this forum, some are a bit scary, others are actually encouraging.  But one thing for sure:  it helps me realize, WE CAN DO THIS.

Thanks all for listening.

    Good for you

I am so glad that you are taking the bull by the horns, changing your medical team and getting things moving.

I hate it when a Doctor stands outside the exam room reading my chart. I'll do that when I'm on a regular visit, but when I go to my Oncologist or surgeon, I want to know that he has read my records before he gets outside the door.

In fact I called his office today and asked if my latest blood resutls had been recieved and read by the Doctor.

I pray that your new team will get started with you right away.

This forum is filled with both the good and the sad. There is no denying the fact that we lose our friends here, too many and too often, but while we are alive and kicking, we are kicking and we're here to help others on this journey as well as getting help ourselves.

Keep that war-face on, and march right into battle. We're by your side.

And please keep us updated and visit often.

    Run away! Run away!

Yeah, I would find a new oncologist lickety split. Her behavior was not professional, and not to mention flaky!

As time goes by and new options open up, your primary onc will be an anchor on your team and new specialists you may want to work with will usually contact your primary for a referral or an opinion as to whether the new treatment might help. You will need an advocate, and not someone who has a shallow understanding of your case.

Good move making a switch now. Good luck with your treatments and welcome to the board.

I am glad you are taking

I am glad you are taking control of your situation. Please feel free to vent here when ever you need to. Unfortunately there are a lot of doctors out there who can be real jerks.

    Sounds familiar...

Sounds like our experience with my husband's former oncologist.  He drops bombs, then tells you to wait 2 weeks for an appt., reads your chart as you're sitting there (after waiting an hour) and then makes phone calls for consultations while you're there that he should have made prior to your visit.  He's more interested in talking about golf, his vacations, etc. than cancer.  We moved on to a larger, more hopeful and professional cancer center and are SO GLAD we did it.  It's hard and it sucks that sometimes you are treated that way, but it worked out for us.  He called my husband and asked if he did anything wrong after we switched.  I wanted to tell him SO many things, but I didn't.  I just told him it was time for more specialized care. He had told us the 2nd tumor they found in his small intestines was very rare and he was puzzled by it.  New oncologist said it happens around 20% of the time and would not call it rare.  New onc. deals only with GI cancers.  We are SO happy there, there is no comparison to the old place.

It can feel daunting to start over, but you need to pursue it.  We went to the new place within 24 hours of calling.  They had access to ALL his info, scans, etc.  We did not have to fill out one form or wait for anything.  The old place would make you fill out forms almost every time you went as if you were a brand new patient.  It's amazing how different two places can be (and they are affiliated).

Good luck and keep at it.  It will be well worth it.  Don't let anyone make you feel that way again.

    This was an actual oncologist?

Wow.  Not good at all.  Glad you found a new doc, and it sounds like you've gotten someone with more expertise anyway, so good for you for being proactive!  I sincerely believe that if I had relied on my oncologist, I wouldn't be sitting here typing right now, so being your own advocate is a great thing.

    Bad Doctors

We have had a couple doctors similar to your description.  We tell them, "Do not even think about billing me or my insurance company!"  We then wrtie certified letters to their practice and the Hospital they are associated with.  In no other business would this level of incompetence be accepted.  (OK, Politicians.)

In no other business could one bill their client with no knowledge of the problem, no preparation for meetings, etc...  Why this is acceptable with our doctors, is mind numbing to me.   We had a Doctor looking at a folder, and telling us he was reading my wife's chart.  There was nothing mentioned about my wife's known chronic disease.  I walked over and grabbed the "Chart" out of his hand.  It was an empty folder!  I then screamed at him and asked for a partner of the business immediately.  When the second Doctor came in, I showed him the fraud that the first Doctor was trying to perpetrate.   We found out from a Doctor friend that the Doc in question was let go and admonished from his rights at the hospital also.  So, I do recommend to complain to the practice. Why should any one else get this bad doctor?

    Best Always,  mike

    Opinion

So glad that you fired them and getting someone new.  How can any doctor walk into a room and tell you one thing and then turn around and say something totally different.  And the attitude is terrible.  I'd probably report them to the head of oncology plus the director of the board and state what happened.  Bet she won't have a job much longer.  Sorry you to join our group, but glad that you did.  Hope that your next doctor turns out to be a gem and will get your the appropriate medical attention that you need and deserve.  We are here to help you get through all that you have coming up and answer questions.  Please keep us informed about the new doctor you found and what they plan for you.

    I had similar experiences and

I had similar experiences and that was at the large cancer center, you have to be your own advocate!  It's shameful.  At my original hospital after my first failed surgery, my surgeon did not want to do chemo or radiation.  That was a red flag.  I switched to Sloan, had to wait two months just to get in, then had some warped info going around because residents were not giving complete reports, then the whole team went on vacation!  Finally I said no more students involved, no more waiting, let's get this organized.  My sister stepped in and took notes.  Really my sister and this board are what helped me make sure I was using logic.  If I posted "this is what's happening".  I got back "this is what you should be doing".  I'd call my sister and she'd take notes, we'd come up with our own questions since it's so confusing in the beginning and then we'd ask them all at the next visit (my sister was on the phone through every visit).

    Thank you For Listening

Thanks all of you.  You are all so right: we are our best advocate.  It's still mind boggling thinking about how she said "I told your husband it was benign"....What if I hadn't read my own charts?  Anyway, she walked me over to her nurse to schedule a procedure to tatoo the area, so that she could then send me to a surgeon.  The tatoo procedure was supposed to be on the 16th.

I MD Anderson the very next day.  I'm lucky enough to have access to them.  Between that time and the 16th, I have had all kinds of CT Scans, EKG, blood work, and all kinds of other screenings.  Yesterday, they tatooed my intestine.  So in reality, I didn't lose a single day!

Both doctors are consistent in that I have to have a resection.  I'm going in Thursday Surprised  New doctor also wants to take out 12 lymph nodes.  Results from screening are all clear.  All the doctors I have seen tell me how lucky I was to catch it this early.....  Again, being being my own advocate pays off: I had been blown off by doctors in the past, telling me it was hemorroids.  I'm the one that pushed for a colonoscopy.

I'm talking to my work about sick leave vs. disability leave.....  I'm told it's 4 to 6 week recovery period.

Thank you all for letting me vent again.  I eagerly read all your success stories, and pray for the not so successful-as-of-yet.   We can do this!

    Love,

    Good thoughts!

I am so glad things turned out better.  I agree with all the advice. I am 10 weeks out of surgery. It helps to walk as much as you can. My advice is to give yourself plenty of time to heal. We tend to try to rush things. Everyone heals at a different pace. I work at home so I had the ability to adapt my working time.  I started feeling my "new normal" around 8 weeks. I hope that helps. Good luck. You'll be in my prayers.

    No worries

The resection sounds bad, but its not. As long as you follow orders, make sure others visiting you are nice and clean, don't try to do things too soon, drink, drink, drink, pee, pee, pee, walk, walk, walk, (and fart, they always want that) then all will go well.

I bounced right back from my resection. Sure, it was uncomfortable, and thats your body telling you it wants time to heal.

I had 21 lymph nodes removed. The surgeon always takes lymph nodes, its part of the surgery.

I will be thinking about you on Thursday, sending a prayer or good vibes (I do both, if prayers aren't your thing). And I look forward to hearing from you when you're feeling up to it.

I'm sure someone here will advise you about the leave. I was out of work when I had my surgery, so didn't have to mess with all of that.

    Good luck!
