Quick Response, Please! Re: Steroids
Hi all,
thoughts on steroid use for palliative care? Anyone ever been administered steroids before to alleviate pain?
my husband is in the hospital for an infection in the lungs. He is at stage IV clear cell RCC. Surgery on left kidney is not an option at this point, so doctors are hoping to clear the infection and lower the extreme pain first before he can start Afinitor. So, they want to administer 5 days of steroids and target radiation treatment.
thoughts?

Steroids!
Hi there,
I am so sorry to hear about your husbands infection. I am also stage 1V, I have tumours in my lungs and between the lungs along with very enlarged affected lymph nodes. I also had swelling and inflammation around my heart. I was in quite a bit of pain and coughing, my Oncologist placed me on 10 days of steroids to reduce all the node inflammation and that from around the heart. It made a noticeable difference. I hope this information is of help to you! I wish your husband all the best and hope the infection responds quickly to treatment.

Steroids
Over the long run steroids can be harmful to Kidney Function. On two incidents, a knee injury and a rib injury I have used Advil for pain for a couple of days after discussing the same with my Neph. doctor. My answer is moderation if the doctor goes along and it appears he is.

are effectively used as a strong anti-inflammatory. Reduce the inflammation and the swelling and the pain gets reduced. The pain resolves not because something like prednisone is a pain killer. It resolves because of the reduction in inflammation and swelling. It is very effective. However, it is for short term use in people like us. For people like arthritics with severe disability, it is used for longer duration.

I have been on steroids for
I have been on steroids for about 3 weeks and have another 3 to go. I am in a clinical trial and had an adverse reaction to the drugs that caused severe swelling around my pituitary gland, gave me migraines nausea, etc. All of the symptoms are gone with the exception of perspiring from the steroids. No other issues.

Hi, I'm not here to offer any advice regarding the use of steroids as, I have no experience with them in relation to my RCC. I just wanted to extend well wishes to you and your hubby and let you know I'm sending good juju your way. It's been a couple of days since your post so hopefully your hubby has made some improvement. I can only imagine how difficult this must be on the both of you and I am so sorry your'e going thru it.
