Oy what a day....

in Ovarian Cancer #1

Arrived at noon for big chemo day gemzar/carbo/avastin. Had Gemzar last week no problem Except for blood sugar went to 350 next morning. Decided with PCP to use short acting insulin on big chemo days as I have to use decadron for 4 days in a row. At my last chemo for the first occurrence I had a reaction to the carbo so I am now tagged 'allergic' 

so, they start pre chemo drip...aloxi and emend And saline. All good til 6 mins in to Gemzar my heart starts racing and goes to 257 . Nothing they did worked to bring it down. My blood sugar was in the 200's and I'd taken meds and hadn't eaten since 7 am. Finally after 3 hours I got a beta blocker and it worked. They admitted me the hospital and here I will stay til someone figures out whst happens. Had an EKG and all is well.primary suspect is the decadron....it's effect on my normally easy diabetes was scary. They just gave me more insulin and an hour later it's still 350. Yikes!

and I haven't gotten chemo so I will have to start all over again . Grrrrrr!

i didn't think this was going to be easy, but really.

and I am NPO and no one knows why and while they have said they will call the doctor, I am still thirsty and hungry.

couldnt I just be home vomiting and exhausted like I thought I'd be?...

    Darn it, Susan!

    And oy vey is right!  Why couldn't things go easy for you your first big chemo day?  But the best place for you right now is the hospital, with the professionals taking care of you.  They'll figure this out and make the necessary adjustments to allow you to start your chemo.

    OMG Susan, I am so sorry

    I don't understand the NPO part, you probably need an insulin drip if they don't feed you soon.

    I am hoping that it was resolved yesterday and you are having a GOOD Friday.

    Darn steroids

    and darn Carbo too! I have to take extra insulin too during chemo. Even when I don't eat much sugar is still high...500 sometimes! They should atleast give you fluids. This cancer sucks but you will get to enjoy another remission. Stay strong..hope you are home in your own bed....Val

    Still in the hospital, no chemo

    Looks like I had some kind of 'cardiac event' that that has to be investigated before I can be on chemo. I am feeling some frustration over how slowly things are unfolding....waiting on my gyn/onc to get back to me is taking forever. I'm here for another night at least. Miss my dogs and being home....thankfully my son can be there while I'm here. I had a lot of great visits with friends and some great laughs today, but beneath the smiles are the worried looks. If I can't have chemo, then what?

    Susan, just another bump in the road.

    The cardiac event happened before you started chemo and you were not allergic to Gemzar the last time. It's definitely because of steroids. Doctors will figure it out, put you an a different steroid and re-start chemo. I can imagine how frustrating it is to be at the hospital during long week end. I hope you got food. I would've raided the nearest vending machine by now.

    Dear Susan

    I'm glad you've had visits from friends.  Wish we could be there with you too.  I think you'll start your chemo soon but I know how hard it is to wait and wonder.  I'm glad to hear too that your dogs are in good hands while you are temporarily in the hospital.  I know I would worry about my cats.  Sending lots of positive thoughts your way.

    can handle anything once they know what they are dealing with so I hope this

    The days just keeps on going...

    Had a frustrating day with little news yesterday but today the heart enzyme test seems to have gone down indicating no heart attack and so chemo is back on the table for today. The best outcome would be that I tolerate it well. I think I will be heavily premedicated and the drip will be super slow......I might even be able to go home tonight. Fingers crossed!
