Here's a curious question about eating
Hi guys have a curious question that me and my speach specialist were talking about. While she is mostly right now teaching me the new way to eat we were talking about spoons and forks.Every spoon and fork bends upward towards roof of mouth we were wondering if they make anything that bends down the other way to make it easier to get our food to back of tounge. We looked on the net but all we found were ones that bend left to right for stroke vitums.Has anyone seen them or know where to get them.Or do you use the them upside down??

Well I think some creative
Well I think some creative person would have thought of this before. Especially the therapist field. Wish I was handy enough to invent one. As Kteacher said, try bending a cheap fork and spoon. The fork could be used upside down the way English do. The spoon would be harder. Good luck in finding something thatk works.

Wow, this is quite a challenge. For myself, the utensils are fine. I don't have a lot of feeling 1/2 lips and mouth. I only chew on the left side. Sometimes I miss my mouth or food just slips out my numb side. I always make sure I have at least 2 napkins per meal! I will keep looking for you and let you know what I have found. Wondering about those wooden utensils that the hospitl cafeteria have.

I was on to the same thinkingSkiffin16 said:LOL....
OK, my abi-normal logic just says turn your fork or spoon over.....
But spoons tend to have a short life span at my house.... Shelley bends the sppons down, and I bend them up... They can't handle too many of those, LOL...
JG
John....turn the fork over, and voila! It's going the other way. As for spoons....if you're eating soup, turning it over will get the soup into your lap....Cheap cutlery bends any direction you want or don't want....I know this by personal experience.

Hi kteacher,
I have the same problem just opposite side of face. my left side is numb from beneath my eye to middle of chin.
when they removed muscle and 5th nerve the joy of eating turned into a battle to enjoy.. can only open mouth about 1/2 inch so difficult to put anything in.. never relized how much I loved mashed potatoes.

I am doing ok eating. I have gained enough weight that there was a red flag on the computer on Tuesday when I went to the doctors. I cut everything small and it takes a long time to finish a meal. Portions are smaller than they used to be. No spices and difficult to eat meat, but life is good.

Forks do work easier am going to work on the spoons.Think first I'll straighten one completly then slowly bend to fit me.At speach yesterday she had me eating meatloaf and loads of gravy. She said to try other meats also but cut small and slow cook or anything that will make the meat soft and stay away from any part that is hard at least for now.Am trying to gain some so when radiation starts next week won't take such a hit...I hope...

Meatloaf (you can add grated up carrots and chopped celery), ground meat and fish are the easiest for me to eat. Fish has been good. Gravy and sauces make it all easier.
