PET Scan

in Head and Neck Cancer #1

I will have the PET Scan on this Thursday. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is not worse than the first dx. The physical inspection did not show any other nodes swollen so like I said I am keeping my fingers crossed. 

Still trying to lift the boulder off me. I feel weak from the stress of it all.

    One day at a time

    All you can do is take one day at a time.  Schedule a dental appointment.  You might need some work or removals before radiation starts.  Keep a notebook nearby.  It's a busy time and then hurry up and wait.

    Remember, this is all a part of the planning process, they are putting together a tailor made plan just for you.  The “stress boulder” does get more manageable as the plan is set and treatments get underway.  You still have plenty of time to  review  the Superthread, to ask questions and get your head around this detour.

    The adventure is not all bad (not all), I met a lot of nice and caring people and learned what it means to roll with the punches.

    You will do fine; I hope you have a less bumpy road.

    i do not understand about the

    i do not understand about the dental work? I do have a cleaning scheduled and as far as I know I do not have any issues there. My front teethnic are implants. 

    Can you elaborate?

    Teeth

    It is much easier to heal if you need to have a tooth removed.  Once you have had radiation, dental care is something that you want to maintain.  Make sure that your dentist know what you are about to undertake.  Make sure that your dentist understands the complications that can arise after cancer treatment.  Many need to have HBO (hyperbaric oxygen treatment) before tooth removal after radiation.  What I understand is that radiation causes blood circulation problems, especially in jaw area.  If there is not information on the Superthread you might put dental care or ORN in the search box at the top of the topic page.

    Dental work

    My husband wouldn't see a dentist before he started his first round of radiation.  The majority of his teeth on the bottom were already removed.  Sad thing is that after two rounds of radiation (total 72 radiation treatments) he can barely open his mouth.  So if if has any problems, which so far he claims he isn't, it would be very hard for a dentist to do anything.  So, my opinion, see your dentist and tell him what is going on.

    Mike, saying a prayer for a good report on the scan.  i'm sorry you feel as though you are carrying around a boulder.  we have all felt that way.  it will get better for you once your plan is put into action.  we are here for you anytime you need us.  i hope you sail thru tx and come out the other side w/very few side effects.  keep us posted on your progress.

    They want any problem teeth out prior to rads and my old metal fillings had to be removed and replaced before radiation began. I agree with getting an appt. book if you don't already have one. You can pick one up at Walgreens for a dollar or two. I found that very helpful and still do.

    Hi Matt,

    That was Max in black in the background and Krispie in orange in the foreground. They are our "kids". They are Bichon Frise' .

    For me, my rad onc required a call from my dentist as part of my pre-treatment planning.

    By the way, I have 3 crowns, numerous fillings and 28 original teeth.

    So far so good.

    Thanks Matt,

    right now I am just hoping it is not worse than the original dx, to say the least I am scared as hell that it may be. My wife is being such an anchor for me at this time while my emotions are up and down like a yo-yo. Thank God for her.
