Mass in Kidney

in Kidney Cancer #1

HEllo,

 

I am coming over from another board. Today I got a call from the Dr stating that my MRI showed a mass going inside my kidney and he have to remove the whole kidney because of where it is growing. I started having issue with peeing heavy amounts of blood. I did a CT scan and ulta sound but it did not get a good picture. My questions is how is life with one kidney. I know there are many people living with just one. What should I expect and such and such.

    One Kidney

    Yeah,

     

    I have been living with 1 kidney for over 11 and 1/2 years.

    Many of us are born that way. Others donate a Kidney to someone else.

    Obniously your Kidney function is not going to be what it used to. This can lead to heart issues if not addressed.

    The easiest explanation with RCC though and 1 kidney is that it beats the alternative. Assuming they get the Kidney out before any Cancer spreads you shoul be able to lead a fairly normal Life.

    There is no conscious feeling that you only have 1 kidney, just the realization that that is the way it is.

    Welcome to the club which no one wants to join.

    You are right  know one wants to join this club. This will be my second induction to the club. My first was cervial back in 2010.

     

    I rather have one kidney than have two and one is growing stuff it shouldn't.

    Most all if us have one and are doing just fine.

    I have had one kidney since 2012.  For me, the only real change is the loss of NSAIDs.  I miss Ibuprofin. 

    Living with 1 kindey means you need to take care of it.  However, we only need one kidney.  So, it should be fine.  In fact, some people are born with only one kidney and have no problems with it.  I have a friend that found out, at 54, he had one kidney -- because of an MRI for something else.

    I would be more concerned about the tumor than the missing kidney.

    My sister only had one kidney.

    She didn't find out until she was in her 60's. For me my GFR remains over 60. My creatinine is always 1.0. Good numbers for a 20 yo with 2 kidneys.

    Welcome to the club...

    About the only difference is you can't be a kidney donorSmile...a few minor dietary and lifestyle changes, if you choose (not a requirement), but really life goes on pretty much as before.

    Daughter has one

    My 16 year old daughter with spina bifida had to have her right kidney removed at 3 and hasn't had any problems only having one.

    What are some of the things I should do or have after the surgery. Like have a  button up shirt because it would be easier. Some stuff like that. THanks again for the information

    After surgery designer clothes

    Yeah,

     

    For the first couple of weeks a loose fitting sweatshirt and loose fitting sweatpants should make it easier. Some of the ladies have  posted earlier suggestions  about other things which I have no interest in.

    Depends

    It depends on the type of surgery. Mine was hand assiated laproscopic. If you have open, scaps are in different places.

    Yes, I wore sweat pants, a t-shirt, and slippers, no sox to the hospital.  And had a jacket in case the weather was bad when I left the hospital.  You may have some swelling in the feet, so slippers make sense.  They will likely give you hospital sox, which are thick and warm too..!   If you have some type of entertainment, take that as well.  I took my laptop and cell phone (with chargers).  Oh and an extension chord too...   If you have your own entertainment, then family and friends are less "obligated" to try and entertain you all day.  You will need more help at home for the next few days.  The hospital staff should take good care of your daily needs.  Oh and do not be shy post surgery to ask for more than just water.  I got orange juice and popsicles at 2 AM.!  The staff often is pretty bored in the middle of the night, so getting stuff like that helps them pass the time.
