I've never done the 'diet' sodas. Well, there have been a few times when I was somewhere that there was only 'diet' sodas so had to drink at least some of one. I learned real quick that my body can not handle the chemicals at all. I never get headaches but within having approx 1/2 can of the 'diet', I will have what I think is probably the same as a migraine.
There have recently been 'stuff' on TV saying that so called 'diet' can actually cause weight gain.
I'm a 'waterholic' - I always have water handy. Just me.

Good for you!! So glad to
Good for you!! So glad to hear you are kicking the soda habit!! I know it can be hard. Sounds like more than habit, to me though, when you go thru a drive thru for diet coke and you aren't even thirsty!!
But the good thing is you are drinking more water!!
Hope you have continued success!

There is a very fine line between 'habit' and 'addiction'.

- Habit develops through practice or repetition.
- It manifests itself in regularity.
- Habit is conscious in nature. A person can have control over his habits.
- The long time outcomes of habit are positive to the self.
Addiction: It is also the repeated performance of an act but something without which you would find life difficult to live. An addicted person does not have any control over his impulses and is not conscious of his addiction. Addiction is a physical and psychological dependence on substances like drugs, alcohol or tobacco which temporarily affects the chemical composition of the brain.
- Addiction develops through uncontrolled repetition of an act or repeated use of a substance.
- It manifests itself in dependence.
- An addicted person does not have an easy choice in the matter. He cannot control his impulses.
- The long term outcomes of addiction are negative to the self. Addiction is destructive in nature.

Denise, I am very proud of
Denise, I am very proud of you! I gave up diet coke after back surgery in 2009 and I know it is hard. Yay for you!!!!!
I still have problems off and on with nausea and what helps me best is ginger ale and Vietnamese pho (soup). Ugh, I really think the ginger ale is garbage and would like to find a healthier substitute. Water, tea and lemonade don't help with the nausea. Anyone with suggestions? Maybe a homemade ginger ale without all that sugar and BPA?

Have you tried any of the products from the Ginger People? One of our local health food stores carries the Ginger Soother and many have said it helps them with their nausea. I'm diabetic so I didn't use it because they use honey as a sweetner. Here is their website and I see on there they also have a lemon ginger beer.

I used to drink alot of soda-with sugar. Because of weight gain I switched to diet many years ago. I don't usually buy it for home and wasn't drinking much of it until I started going out to lunch every day. I still don't drink soda as much as I did 10 years ago, but I would like to cut back again. The more I drink, the more cravings for it I get. I do drink water the rest of the time.
I know that part of the bad stuff is the caramel/dark coloring in sodas. I was reading the other day that there's actually a measure of units of the "bad" stuff. Diet coke has about 3 parts where diet pepsi has over 25! Stevia has a rootbeer flavor sweentener to use with tonic water.
Cypress Cynthia- the last time I bought a pack some for home was when I was having surgery to help with the nausea afterwards. So I understand that part, but don't have not answer for an alternative.

That's a hard habit to break. I speak from experience. I tried it one year for my new year's resolution and didn't make through January. The next year, I tried it again and that time I made it. I think it was the only New Year's resolution I ever made and kept. These days, I do have a Diet Coke every now and then but never picked up the one can a day (or 2 or 3 cans) like I did before. I feel so much better.
Congrats on your success!
