Stage IV Uterine Adenocarcinoma Mets to Bone

Hello,

I would appreciate any advice and info anybody would have to share.

My sister is 51 yrs old and just diagnosed with Stage IV Uterine Adenocarcinoma that has spread to both pelvic, vertebra & the shoulder. The tumor in the uterus is 9cm & the tumor on the shoulder is 3cm. She is in a lot of pain and will start her first chemo session tomorrow. She has bone fracture in the shoulder where the tumor is and alsof fractures on the L4 & T6 vertebra.

Questions:

1. Anybody with experience on Stage IV Adenocarcinoma with Bone Mets and what is the survival rate?

2. What treatments did you go for this? The doctors do not recommend hysterectomy nor radiation. Just chemo.

3. Any treatments for the bone fractures while receiving chemo?

4. Any other drugs available that will prevent further bone fractures?

5. Any drugs for pain? The doctor prescribed paracetomol & taxomol but do not seem to help.

Would appreciate any info you have. We are very devastated and worried. We lost a family member to lung cancer 2 yrs ago and this can't be happening to us again.

    So very sorry to hear of your sister's condition.  Although diagnosed with Uterine Cancer stage 4, I did not have bone mets, so can't speak to that.  I would say that in terms of the pain, if the meds aren't helping, speak up - call the dr, nurse, whoever, and let them know so she can be as comfortable as possible.

    Hi there -

    I don't have any experience with bone mets but wanted to offer you support, thoughts and send your sister, you, and the rest of your family positive healing energy.  

    I also thought I would share some thoughts with you even though I don't have experience with the particular situation your sister is facing.  As background, my mom was diagnosed with stage IV clear cell adenocarcinoma in April 2013 (no bone mets but had spread throughout lymph system, on her bowel, and to her omentum). She had surgery and chemo. Completed treatment in October and was told in November that she had no evidence of cancer. Will be going for her first 3 month check up soon. 

    First in regard to pain, my mom had what she described as really bad bone pain from chemo. The only thing that helped for her was marijuana. Do you live in a state where medical marijuana is legal? I don't know if it would help your sister because her bone pain might be different but thought I would suggest you consider it because of the wonder it worked for my mom. 

    Second, have you considered complementary treatment with a naturopath? My mom's naturopath has been amazing - both with supporting the health of my mom's immune system and in dealing with treatment side effects when my mom was receiving chemo. A naturopath might be able to provide some pain management suggestions and also supplements and diet to help prevent additional fractures. 

    I am sorry to hear about your sister's bone mets and will continue to keep her and your family in my thoughts.

    I don't understand the why no hysterectomy will be done. That is surprising to me.

    Hi, I am very sorry about your sister. The reason that they are not giving your sister radiation or surgery is because they believe that either a) it is imperative to reduce her tumors first; and, or b) chemo is for palliative care only and your sister is not expected to survive. Get your sister second and third opinions ASAP. Where are you located? A teaching hospital is best. I had IVB uterine adenocarinoma with mets to lymph nodes and am doing well three and half years post-surgery (I also had chemo and was in a clinical trial). A clinical trial will be your sister's best option. If hers is not an aggressive grade of cancer (mine was not) then she has a good shot or at least a decent shot. As to pain meds, get any and all.     You may want to seek a second opinion. Some places, I believe, offer them at no charge or the insurance fully covers it.

    Thank you so much for your best wishes. Congrats on 3.5yrs post surgery. It is very encouraging to us.

    I worry for the worst for my sis since they did not recommend surgery. My sis is losing alot of weight during the 1st chemo session, to under 100lbs. That worries me, because she has lost 40+lbs since. She will do her 2nd session next week. Hope her blood counts will allow her to continue treatment. Unfortunately her's high grade adenocarcinoma.

     

    Which clinical trial are you in? I am also trying to look into clinical trials for her. Thanks so much for your reply.

    Hello MobMob,

     

    Thanks for your note. I don't know why they don't do hysterectomy, I think the cells are widespread that they want to keep them under control, if it is at all possible. She's continue with 2nd chemo next week. I am praying & hoping she responds well. She's just so tired everyday. Thank you for your kind thoughts.

    Lot's to figure out.

    My wife has bone mets stage iv endometrial c dx aug 2013 had 5 carbo-taxol chemo once every 28 days. She has neuropathy hands and feet so had to swich chemo regime. Now on gemcitabine once a week for 3 weeks cycle. Had two so far & hope it helps

    My partner has similar condition bone mets. Compressed fracture to spine all bones affected. To manage pain she has been prescribed 3 mg. slow release hydromorphone twice daily with 1mg hyd. for breakthrough during the day if pain creeps up. This was monitored as the chemo treatments are ongoing and now she takes 6mg slow release 2x daily with 1 or 2 -2mg breakthrough as needed. Pain management seems to be well under control for now. The drugs don't seem to impair her daily limited functions. Everybody is different what works for one may not for the other. I wish you the best
