Snow Storm

To all the posters that live in the South as I do. Snow storm is upon us right now and hope it doesn't kill our power. Try to stay safe. Never seen anything like this !!! Snow,ice,freezing rain...John

    We can't keep up with you southerners and the storms.  Keep bundled .  Hope you have a generator.  I just now read about it and didn't realize how VERY serious it is.  We hope you and your family will be safe and will be thinking about all of you who are affected.

    Ouch !

    As I have mentioned before, I live in SC just below Asheville near the NC line, and we are expecting a foot of snow!  We already have six inches on the ground, and it has turned to sleet now and the air temp is 25, so all of this will freeze hard tonight. We may not be able to go anywhere for another 36 hours or more, but are OK, with power still on. The problem is that we totally lack experience with this that the Northeast has .

    My brother in Charleston (on the coast) has no power, due to sleet dropping tree limbs .

    Isn't it BEAUTIFUL??!! I just baked a cake, which took f-o-r-e-v-e-r because I couldn't stop staring out the window. We have a number of Robins in the yard and they seem to be enjoying it too. Chili is made and if need be, I can reheat it on the butane camp stove. Plenty of flashlights and candles on hand. If nothing else, we can crawl into bed and pile blankets over us. How bad can that be?

    I think you know that I'm a Buffalonian.  Obviously Buffalo has experience in dealing with lots of snow (although our reputation is greatly exaggerated).  We wake up to 2 feet of snow, clear the driveway, and get ourselves to work.  The plows would have worked the night clearing everything.  Sure, the drive to work is slow...but not bad.  The last two years we received on 50% of what we normally receive.  2013-2014 is turning out to be more 'normal' for us.

    So...for those not use to dealing with the snow and ice let me offer advice given by our Mayor back in the 1970s: "Stay home.  Sit back and open up a 6 pack."

    My brother-in-law lives in Poughkeepsie, so I have heard all of the NY horror storys. 

    I also just read that Lake Superior is on schedule to freeze over for the first time in many decades .

    Well, Poughkeepsie is about a 5.5 hour drive from here.  They are pretty lucky because they don't have a lake closeby.  They probably get a lot because of the mountains but living near one of the Great Lakes is when it gets tricky.  In the Southtowns (where I live) we could be getting hit with a foot of snow but 20 minutes away you'll be able to see grass.

    I wonder how close Lake Ontario (the deepest of all the lakes) is to freezing over.  I can never remember it doing so.

    Moonshine Memories

    Well I don't have a six pack but I do have a bottle of Vodka, tonic and limes and there's some wine here too :).  I'm having a "Downton Abbey Dig In".  I'm rewatching all 3 seasons before I start season 4 (DVR'd). I'm well into season 3 now.  Oh, I got a nice surpise today - I got a nice refund check from the insurance company on my COBRA (not you John) for a little over a month of premiums I paid.  That will pay my mortgage next month.

    I miss my sister.  The last time we had snow like this I got stuck with her and my brother-in-law at their house.  We decided to make a party of it.  We built a big fire in the fireplace and drank everything in the house.  Later, brother-in-law remembered he had some locally made moonshine - so we tapped into that too.  Needless to say the next day, none of us felt exactly "well" but it was one of those fun crazy things you do that makes a memory (what we could that is):).  

    Everyone be safe and for those of you in the warmer climates, I'm jealous.

    Hi All!

     

    Well I'm a Jersey Girl so we are experienced with this stuff but I have to say it feels like everything has come to a standstill today! I haven't found anyone that went to work today or if they did they got there and the business closed!  The only people working are the telecommuters! 

    So to my friends down South- be careful and stay in if you can.  This crazy weather is something else and when you aren't used to the temps as well as the snow itself I can only imagine how difficult it is!

     

    We have a foot already and this storm is to go on until tomorrow morning!

     

    I'm cuddling up with my kindle and my 16 year old "puppy" and then I think I'll nap.

    Still snowing

    Sleeted most of last night mixed with snow and now mostly snow.  I live at the bottom of a hill and one of my neighbors got his car stuck in the middle of the road.  It's a narrow street so it is pretty much blocked now.  I was good and opted for hot chocolate instead of vodka last night :).  I rarely drink these days anyway.  Everybody hang tight- this will be over soon.

    Did you get to make yor ice cream Rocquie?  My mom used to make it when we were kids.

      We called it snow cream. Put a little vanilla in. I don't remember how to make it. Anybody know the recipe? Used to have it a lot where I was raised in Maryland. It was so good.  John

    Hi John,

      I was wondering how things were going for you. We watch the news and check all the area's where friends and family live and it sure didn't look good for your area. It's been a crazy winter here for us. We didn't get any snow to speak of until last week and then we had 10 inches drop in less than 8 hours. That's still not a big deal for us, because usually by February we have had more than our share of snow. The mountains are getting plenty of snow, so thats good for summer irrigation for the farmers. You hang in there...sure hope you don't lose power. Will be keeping you and everyone else on the other side of the country in my prayers!  Love...Sue

    Snow Storm

    Sue,

      The storm is about gone now, but now we have the freezing to worry about. Still a chance a tree branch could fall across the power lines. There are a few of us on here that live in the south, John
