GIST IN VIET NAM VETERANS

My husband is a Vietnam veteran. He was diagnosed with GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumor)in August 2009, had surgery on September 11, 2009. Surgeon removed thirty percent of his stomach and fifteen percent of his liver. He was put on a drug called GLEEVEC. Five and a half months later, and this GIST has returned. One last drug, called Sutent to try and shrink this soft tissue sarcoma. How many other Vietnam veterans out there with this very rare cancer?????????? We are trying to appeal the VA's denial of this GIST having a connection to Agent Orange and other herbicides used in Vietnam. What are your stories????

    I also have a GIST and a Vietnam vet. I applied to the VA for a claim. They has requested documanation for a link between Agent Orange and a GIST. Can find any on the internet. Can you help? Thank You, Billjo

    Agent Orange & GIST

    Hi Billjo,  I hope by now you have found this information and have filed a VA compensation claim.  If not the following should help.  A decision by the Board of Veterans Appeals (BVA) in docket number 07-25, Citation number 0926356 found that GIST tumors are a soft tissue sarcoma and meet the presumptive criteria for an Agent Orange condition.  In that case they granted service connected disability.  If you haven't filed a claim yet do so and cite this BVA decision.

    Hi jtbrua — thanks to the Docket #. 1969 RVN vet including areas heavily agent oranged. Level 4 GIST found in May of 2014. I'm on imatinib (Gleevec™) since since surgery. Does VA cover any of the cost of that seriously spendy drug?

    Hello my name is Paul retired veteran "got the Gist"

    I was denied first for my disability because I was not in a nuclear area so now I'm working on my second disability claim with this information and the two references docket number 0926356 and also a second one I found was 0937177 both in the same time of 7.25 2005 if you still online or still alive hit me back I'll be looking around on the internet and recuperating from my second surgery tumor /  resection of my liver / Y 90 rad ...
