Maybe TMI, but it's beginning to be a problem.
First of all, I'm 8 months out from surgery and the right kidney area (where there is nothing anymore) is still kind of "bulgy" and tender. That I can deal with...don't like it but I can deal with it. What I can't deal with is the persistent gas that I have and have had since the surgery! I mean, it's BAD! If I get up from a chair...I toot...walk...toot...etc, etc. It is NOT controllable, and my husband is getting really tired of me looking at him when we are out some where, like HE just tooted instead of me! I know it sounds funny, but the humor is quickly going downhill. Has anyone else ever had this problem? I'm wondering if the bulge on my right side with the tenderness is maybe like a hernia and somehow my intestines have gotten twisted or something and is causing the gas situation.
I am watching my diet and trying to avoid gas producing food. Doesn't appear to matter what I eat. Right now I think the natural gas people are ready to lease mineral rights from me....

Sorry. I didn't have this problem.
Wish I had something to say to help. You haven't changed your diet?
I'm pretty sure the kidney isn't connected directly to the intestine, but I never made it to medical school! I have no idea why you'd have this so many months after your surgery. Were you on antibiotics at some point?
Reminds me of a funny problem I had after my surgery (and this is definitely TMI), the second or third day after my surgery when I was home, I went to urinate and at the end as I was finishing, air came out instead of urine. It was the weirdest thing I'd ever felt in my life, and I freaked out. I knew the doctor had removed my kidney, and they had left the ureter, and I convinced myself the doctor had forgotten to tie it off and the air in my belly from the machine they use to blow your stomach up during the lap surgery was making its way into my bladder. It really, really scared me.
I called the doctor's nurse right away to ask, and she laughed. She said it's not an uncommon side effect of the foli catheter being inserted and that sometimes it pushes air into the bladder, and it might take a few days to get it all out. Whew! I'm so glad they don't tell you all the things that "might" happen, but maybe they could tell you some of them...
Well, I wish you luck in resolving this (and your husband!!)

Toot Toot!
Hi Tillie,
I can imagine that the problem has become beyond a joke! I just wondered if your food is being digested properly, you should be able to tell if it's not. You may find that a good digestive enzyme helps along with a probiotic. You can either buy bitters as a digestive aid or just a regular digestive aid, also take ginger or drink ginger tea which calms the bowel.
I have a bulge which is painful if I bend for too long, it is hard so I assume it's a herniation! I don't have gas though! this sort of gas is usually due to fermentation in the lower bowel, so something to help break food down and speed ellimination should help!

Gas happens
I had pain and bulging months after my surgery, but 4-1/2 years down the line, the buldging is gone and the gas-- ain't. When it gets bad a take activated charcoal tablets for a couple of days, and the gas is gone for weeks or even months. My doctor said gas is healthy-- it lets you know your intestines are working properly, but he could understand that excessive gas is a nuisance to the world-- at least to the world within 10 feet of you. He recommended Gas X or something like that, but another friend recommended the activated charcoal, and I found it to be quick and easy.

Activated charcoal is very good for gas! You have to be careful with it though because it is used to detox the body. It will bind itself to any toxic substances including drugs, so if you are on medication you have to ensure you take it at least two hours apart:)

You're right Djinnie! I take my meds in the morning and at night, so anything else that could interfere is taken midday or early afternoon. That's just my routine so I forgot to mention it. Activate charcoal does work wonders, though, and it's fast-acting.

Tootin' Tillie
Oh dear Tillie, bless your heart!
Other than the initial gas escaping after surgery, I haven't been too gassy. I do however, have a good size bulge in my tummy. It tends to get bigger as the day goes and at times, my belly is really lopsided. I can no longer wear things that tie around my waist because the bulge causes the cinched waist to ride up, making me look pregnant. Not sure how I will deal with this in a bathing suit while on my cruise next month. Luckily, I won't know anybody. Makes baring the bod a bit easier, knowing I'll never see those people again. I'm sure tho, I'll get my share of double takes as I'm sipping my little umbrella drinks, looking 7 months pregnant. Maybe I'll light a cigarette, rub my belly and walk with a waddle...that oughta teach em to stare, hehehe.
To me, the bulge feels like a muscle. I've read of others with the bulge, many of them claiming to have developed the bulge slowly, over time but I've had mine from day one. Having had multiple herina repairs through the years, I've come to know what they feel like. They feel squishy, not hard, like my bulge. The more bloated my tummy gets throughout the day, the harder and bigger my bulge. The bulge also causes my belly button to be misshaped. It's really bizaar looking.
Being a landman, I couldn't help but laugh at the reference to leased minerals. What a toot, I mean, hoot you are!
Hope you find relief soon!!

Nuh-uhhhh! You can't blame it on me! I don't even take responsibilities for my own! LOL. My "gasification" seems to be slowing down some, but my bulging upper abdomen is getting bigger and I've been having horrendous (sounds more severe than horrible!) indigestion for the past 4 nights. Eating TUMS like candy at night....yuck. But, I've gotta admit, burps are better'n farts.

Five dogs, Foxy?? Does your wife have something to hide? Addicted to eating chili? Or lactose intolerant, but likes cheese? lol. I am not bragging or anything, but I only have 1 little, tiny dog....but our little fartriloquist is pretty busy in this household. So now we also have a cat. The ironic thing? Remember how I was worried about being in the hospital and having to pass gas while having a roommate? (even if it was a male roommate who would have been fine about it). Well I could barely pop one out - but I needed to before I could go home. But as soon as I got home, our little fartriloquist was performing non stop. Ah well, good for a laugh, if nothing else. But, oh, the stories I could tell.
And thanks, Ron for the link to the splish splash song - and for the chuckles. You guys are a gas!

Ronnie! I think whoever coined (better out than in) phrase lacked a sense of smell!!
My little dog is the worst woofer ever! He has a tendency to drop one then leave the room sharpish, a very clever tactic. My other half trained him well, hubby is an expert at it! he always has plausible deniability!
