in Prostate Cancer #1

I am 65 and new to CSN-----------I bloged yesterday and posted my condition ( hindsight is 20-20) trying to decide on a treatment. Here is a quick recap. 10-8-13 psa 7.6----10-30-13 psa 8.5----11-5-13 DRE found tumor----11-14-13 sonogram(prostate 33 grms)-----11-25-13 biopsy (prostate cancer---gleason 4+3=7----T2b----12-17-13 bone scan showed probably no met.----12-19-13 psa 8.5----My urologist is pushing me robotic prostatectomy. I am seeking a second opinion from Radiotheropy of Georgia. I live in Marietta Ga. so they are not far away. Have a appt. for 1-7-14 with them. Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Sorry for the diagnosis. You have come to a good site for information and support.

    In order to provide direction to a treatment decision some more information and diagnostic tests are appropriate.

    First in the core(s) that were positive from your biopsy, what was the involvement of each core, that is, what is the percent cancer of the core. This is important to know as an indicator of extracapsular extension, and a treatment decision. This information is found in the report issued by the pathologist that analyzed your slides.

    Since determining Gleason scores are subjective it is important to have a second opinion of the slides that exist by a world class pathologist so that you will not be under or over treated. One way of accomplishing this is to contact the doctor who did the procedure and request that thise slides sent to a world class pathologist. There is a jon oppenheimer, tenn 888 8687522who is one of these world class pathologists

    Another diagnostic test that is important for you to have is an MRI using a powerful Tesla 3.0 Magnet. This test provides high definition, and can indicate extracapsular extension, and suspicious lessions in the prostate, and how extensive they or may not be..

    KNowing if there is extracapsular extension, that is if the cancer is outside the capsule is critical to treatment decision.

    Much like another well known branded PCa RT tx modality, ProstRCision uses many of the same Gorilla Marketing techniques to "sell" their product (tx) to a specific target PCa population: very low-low risk staged PCa patients who might otherwise do just as well to consider a medically supervised/monitored Active Surveillance protocol. 

     

    Concepts like Caveat Emptor (buyer beware) & truth in advertising come to mind. Anecdotal testimonials from strangers on social networking cancer sites like this one, or on dedicated websites sponsored by the tx provider or RT tx modality manufacturer, should never be a substitute for your own independent research from credible reliable respected medical sources.

    You might benefit from attending a face to face PCa support/networking group. The Us TOO organization has many PCa groups that meet in GA, including one in Marietta. "The meetings are free and open to all men, family, friends, and health professionals interested in prostate cancer/disease."

    Have you looked into Proton

    Have you looked into Proton Beam Therapy?  I finished this treatment on 11/1/13 and am very happy with the results.  I have 0 side effects and it is a painless procedure.  There are 11 treatment centers around the country with more due to come on line soon.  I was treated in Jacksonville, FL at the University of Florida Proton Institute and would highly reccoment them.  If you go to their website, www.floridaproton.org, you will find much information about Proton Treatment.  It is the most exacting treatment using radiation you can receive.  If you email them they will send you, by overnight mail, a packet including a book by Bob Markini that you willf find very very informative and will answer many questions you may have.  The cure rate is the same or better than surgery and the rate of side effects, impedence, incontinentce, etc. is much lower. 

    Usually your urologist will not reccomend Proton Beam Therapy as they are surgeons and cannot perform this.  The centers are very expensive to build and usually are done at Universities where they can get the funding to build these massive buildings required for the treatment.

    My guess is you have not heard of this procedure but I would suggest before making up your mind look into it.
