Social Security Disability ?
I got cancer in 2010 i think. I had stage 4 tongue cancer with 3/4 of my tongue removed and replaced with my thigh. I also had a double neck dissection with cancer on my left side and middle. I had chemo and radiation. For chemo i had Cisplatin. I lost hearing in both ears and a lot of hearing in my right ear.
I was 45 when i got cancer and had mild arthritis. Now i am on morphine and oxycodone because i hurt so bad from nerve damage and arthritis. I am now going through disability review. I worked maintenance and was lead electrician for my company.
I dont know of anyone who would hire anybody that is on this medication. Will i be approved for disability automatically or will i have to fight for it.
Thanks and Merry Christmas

You will qualify
and your qualification should be expedited. There are people here with more recent experience than me, so their word is better than mine on this. I qualified in 2000. Had to fight through the system to receive benefits. Everything is changed since then, and much easier to get through.
HappyHolidays.

Denials often happen.
To have a disability claim expedited, which for the govt may be 3-6 mos., one must have a terminal diagnosis. This exception was enacted after the HIV epidemic and if helped me get disability quickly for many of our Hospice patients in the 90's.
Be patient and keep applying if denied. So sorry you have so many health problems now. Hope you have someone to assist you with the paper work.
Used to be once you recd approval for disability, you would qualify you for state Medicaid until eligible for Medicare (after 24 disability checks) which takes 2 years. Not sure with the new health care programs how it will work.

SS Disability
My husband had basically the same type of cancer. I applied and it went through within 3-4 months. I was afraid it would be denied, but it went right through. I hope it goes as easily for you.

Mine was quick
My company has short term disablity and long term disability. I was on both. As part of the LTD contract, I was required to apply for Soc Sec Dec in the 5th month. Mine went through right away - the next month I started working part time - and had already received my first check.
WHen I did this, I used the social worker at the hospital. I did most of the leg work for the STD, as I was still working. But by the LTD and SSD came around - I wasn't up to it - she made sure all the paperwork got the to proper doctors - and I think she even sent it in.
FOr those of you still in treatment and are pretty much laid up - see if your hospital social worker can do this for you.
For round two - which was diagnosed last week - I might be at a different hosptial - but I already have more forms printed - and will ask about these services again.

You will qualify
I agree with Pat. I applied mid Jan of this year simply based on my DX. I was approved 2 weeks later. SS has a 6 month waiting period before you will see your first check. I did not get my first check until the end of July.

5 month waiting period
My state had a 5 month waiting period and got a letter of approval the 4th month. Family and internet friends had to pay all my bills during this time. Their generosity was amazing. Thank goodness my disability starts next month. I am a music instructor and haven't been able to speak for 6 months. I'm hoping I'll still get foodstamps.
