pathology report

Had my post-op pathology report today. The consultant told me my tumour was a metanephric adenoma, incredibly rare, and benign... Having been told that it was 98℅ likely to be rcc I was so surprised and thrilled, I think even the consultant was in shock.  Thanks to everyone on here for your support, an invaluable help on many occasions. Big time Congratulations

Just when we think we've learned "lots" about the kidney, you came up with something new.  And it's good news.  Way to go...as if you had a choice.

Best wishes and relax a while.

My best friend had a lumpectomy last month-positive.  Yesterday she underwent a double mastectomy...and the sentinel nodes were clean.  So we all have something to cheer for.

Just got a verbal on my path report

T1B  Clear cell carinoma M and N are 0.  Margins were 100 percent clear.  As good as news as I could possibly hope for.  the tumor was 7x5x5 cm.  my concern is that I had two incidences of gross hematuria prior to discovery and surgery, does this increase the chance that the carcinoma has spread microscopically and if so, what odds that I will see a recurrence despite the apparent good news so far?  Any thoughts are appreciated.  Thanks,  Jack

    Hematuria

No, it does not mean your risk is increased.  Nor is it decreased.  We all have CTC's (microscopic Circulating Tumor Cells) in our systems regardless of whether or not we had any incidences of hematuria.  Only a very small percentage of these cells are potentially capable of seeding a metastasis.  They can "bury" themselves and hide away staying dormant for years or decades and then cause their mischief.  That is why regular CT scans are essential.

    Staging

I'm agreeing with Neil, so I won't say what he said. I was told also by my oncologists that they've seen no coorelation between gross hematuria and recurrence. The stage/grade and type are more important and what has been seen to coorelate more closely with metastasis.

Being Stage 1 by definition means you didn't have vascular invasion. This really decreases your chance of it coming back. Your tumor was large for a Stage 1, right on the border of Stage 2, but still there's a big difference between Stage 1 and Stage 3 (vascular invasion or otherwise growing outside the kidney), and you have something like 90% chance of it not coming back (maybe better). You didn't mention the Fuhrman Grade.

Still you need follow up care. If you didn't see a medical oncologist with experience in RCC, you might want to be followed by one. They will be up to date on the latest and will know how best to follow you, and also if any symptoms pop up later, they will be best to evaluate you.

Hope you fall squarely in the "never get another tumor" camp.
