We are just begunning this journey and my dad (the one with lung mets) wonders if he is going to be able to continue working or will he have to take disability from work? And if you did leave work have you can you go back, and at what point?

    Treatment and work...

Much depends on his job, the treatment and tolerance for the same.  For example, if he drives a desk and has surgery he should be back to work in about a month, a more labor intensive job would take a bit longer and depend on his overall physical condition.  There are several here on many of the different drug regimines available that work and lead otherwise normal lives as long as the side effects are controlled.  The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requires that his employer hold his job for a total of 12 weeks (total time off over a 12 month rolling calendar) so he should be safe there unless other complications arise.  Hope this helps.

    Working thru it

I missed 3 weeks if or surgery. I have also had to miss one day every 3 weeks for infusions (Nivolumab trial)to during the first 24 weeks, they took blood once a week as well.

Other than that, I have not missed work. Sutent has had some side effects, but mostly manageable. I do work at a desk.

I have lung and lymph node mets-- I work

I have a desk job that requires reading, writing, computer use, and attention to detail.

    • After my rad nephrectomy, IVC thrombectomy- I was off work for 6 weeks.
    • Removal of single lung met- off 5 days including the weekend.
    • Interleuken 2- Off 6/7 weeks over the course of the treatment and recovery.
    • Votrient-  got really achy one day and stayed home, otherwise, I worked.
    • Study drug-  Off work one day every two weeks for infusions. I had blood draws before I went to work, or after work.

    Initial diagnosis was in

Initial diagnosis was in 2009-- that was primary tumor in kidney, met to inferior vena cava and mets in several lymph nodes.  NED for 3 months after sugery, then the appearance of a small "spot" worth watching on the lung.  That met grew one year later, was removed in 2011, then 1 year later there were several spots on both lungs and some lymph nodes (2012). Basically, there's been some new stuff about once every year.
