No workouts for me!
I hired a trainer to help me develope more stamina.... She was awesome.. we used 2pound weights and kept things to the light side of a workout..... BUT!!!... I was only gone from her gym about half an hour when my feet started to burn, ankles, wrists, and hands hurt....bad.
Still trying to get over it. NEVER felt like such a wimp in my life! I will have to rethink this... Lorikat

Periphial neuropathy.... Mostly goes away after treatment. I'm one of the lucky?!? Ones where it is getting progressively worse!

...easy to start, it's easy to overdo the first time. Take some Advil and don't gibberish up on health.
It will be fine and soon you'll have fun.

Like Laz said, it's so easy to overdo when beginning an exercise program. For years, that was my downfall in trying to begin a running program--too much, too soon. It's what ends most peoples' good intentions of beginning to exercise. Hang in there and keep searching for the right exercise. Even moderate exercise is better than none at all, so there's really no need to push too hard. You can do it!

Sorry about your increasing pain. When I first started back to exercise, I also felt worse for awhile. It takes time and building up stamina in slow increments. The neuropathy will get worse if you don't exercise. Have you tried massage at the cancer hospital? They are knowledgable about neuropathy and focus on the hands and feet. It can't hurt and may be covered by health insurance. Also, I am wondering whether you have had a complete blood workup to identify any vitamin and mineral deficiencies? It is quite possible with this cancer and subsequent treatment that your body is depleted of essential nutrients. Deficiencies of B vitamins, including B-1, B-6 and B-12, and Vitamin E may cause peripheral neuropathy. It might help you quite a bit to make sure you get whole foods that boost these nutrients. It can't hurt. Also, avoid sugar and alcohol which can make neuropathy worse.
I hope this improves for you. I used to get shooting pains and numbness in my feet at night or after a period of inactivity...it was not fun!!0 -

I'm going to Houston next month and will ask for them to check vitamins and things. They DO have massage therapists there as well. SUGAR irritates neuropathy? ive been trying to give up sugar, this WILL do it! Thank you so much!

Hi Lorikat. It was actually my Primary Care doctor, also a cancer survivor, who did all the testing for me. She also tested me for food allergies. The information that I got back was so useful and life altering. I hope you have a good PCP who looks at your body as a whole.0 -

You are definitely on the right track. For the most part my neuropathy, which was awful for a long time is pretty much history.
I have worked my way up now to Bikram Yoga, Yoga in a 105 degree room for 1.5 hours. I wouldn't advise going right in there yet. Tai Chi DVD's helped me also so like Martha said, don't try too much too soon.
The Hot Yoga is the best for me since it has us pulling and stretching our feet during some of the poses and that gets the circulation working better, healing the woundedness. So I would definitely put it on my "must try" list in the near future.
I can now wear heels (not high ones) but still . . . my feet used to really, really hurt.
Good luck,
Sandy

Yikes! I can just go outside in the summer for the 105 degree part! I think you are tougher than me Sandy, but after I have some experience under my belt I may try.. For a few minutes anyway!
