I assume the pathology was not the surgeon's impressions but the actual results; a grade 2 with clean margins and no mets is excellent.
my husband was dx with stage IV because of spinal met; his path report after nephrectomy was 10 cm clear cell (more aggressive than chromophobe) but stage 2 with clean margins.
We felt much better after than before because stage 2 is less aggressive and has likely been in the kidney a long time before going to the spine. That met was surgically removed before the nephrectomy. We journeyed from "at most a year" to "need to watch how it behaves for years".
your report was much better so it is excellent news!

Pathology
My husband just had his Left kidney removed 4 days ago. He had a 7.39 centimetre tumour removed and had to lose his adrenal gland as well. He is home recovering now but very sore and very bruised. He has been prescribed 5 days of morphine to help get him through the pain( he also had his Gall Bladder removed at the same time so is sore on both sides of his body We are waiting now for Pathology tets to determine what Stage his tumour was and are hoping for good results. Congratulations on your good news by the way !

Hi Ritchy
Stay calm no matter what! I don't want to brag but I was 11CM Stage 3 high grade and I am still very much alive and NED over a year later. It takes a while for the body to heal but it does. It takes even longer to recover your strengh but you do.

Richy.
Even with a perfect repot they are going to classify it stage 2 because it is a tiny bit over 7cm. As you ca see already many with tumors larger than yours are doing fine.

Thanks for the encouragement Don. We go back to the Urologist in about 2 weeks and will find out more. I do have a question regarding bruising though. My poor hubby has deep violet bruising totally up and down his left side right down to and including his privates. I have never seen bruises as dark or as much as that ! Our Doctor did say he would have a lot of bruising but this is unreal ! He is also feeling bloated and sore. I know it will get less painful everyday but I think I will call the Doctor about his deep bruises. The side where the Gall Bladder was removed is just fine. Thanks again.

Well, remember his body got beat up pretty badly... but you may want to ask the Dr. I never had bruising but I sure hurt for a while... I bet he is glad it is over with..!
Good Luck..

The urologist/surgeon
quick update I met the the urologist who did the op. We went thru the pathology results. he says my type is very rare and it has better outcome. he says 90% to 95% get cured with surgery alone in stage1&2. I know his very experience with rcc but am not sure about the %%. Am going to have scans every 6 months for 2years & yearly after that for 10yrs. Am going to see rcc oncologist for second opinion. What do u guys think about the %%

Is incorrect. But meaningless anyhow. I had a very similar prognosis as you. The only difference is that my tumor was 11cm vs. yours at 9cm. I have chromophobe histology. My tumor was fully encapsulated in my left kidney. There was no spread - even the adjacent lymph nodes were clear. I was declared NvED for 2+ years after my nephrectomy. But I am now stage IV with bone mets in 3 locations.
Don't listen to any statistics - they are all based on a bell curve. The problem is you don't know where you stand on that curve. You should be scanned every 4 months for the first 2 years. Only after being consistantly NvED for that time period should you consider any longer intervals.

Sorry to hear it came back after 2 yrs. I know they are just stats. i am going to be vigilant & make sure I get scans/MRI regularly. I have been reading studies done on chromophobe( not many out there). they all seems to predict btw 85% to 90% recurence free rate. this type is very rare am in australia they told me less 3% are dxg as chromo rcc.

Yes, chromophobe is relatively rare. Although if you search this website you will find that there is a thread dedicated to tracking information about us chromophobers - and there are quite a few of us around here. The "good" news is that it "normally" is very slow growing and indolent as compared to clear cell and other forms of RCC. However it can, again on rare occasion, become extremely aggressive when/if it morphs into displaying a percentage of sarcomatoid cells. That is why it is worthwhile to do those scans more frequently the first year or so.
This is not a cancer to take for granted. No matter what one's surgeon or urologist may claim.

I was stage 2, ChRCC with a 17.5 x 13 x 11.5 cm tumor on my right kidney that was removed and no mets. My oncologist told me 20% chance of reccurrence and I also have to get scanned every 6 months for the next 2 years, and then yearly up to 5 years after that.

your tumour was 17cm & its still stage 2. That's wonderfully I hope we all stay NED for very long longtime. are u going to see a kidney oncologist for second opinion?.

I consider myself to be very lucky because that tumor was so big, it literally rearranged the organs in my abdominal cavity (for example my liver now sits on the LEFT side of my abdomen!). My oncologist was a kidney specialist so I didnt feel I needed to look any further. But a second opinion is YOUR choice and a lot of doctors actually recommend it!
