RCC and Vitamin D deficiency
Hey everyone!
A few years back when I started to feel sick, the only thing that ever showed up in all 5 million of my blood tests was that I was severely Vitamin D deficient. My doctor had me on multiple rounds of 50,000 IU's of Vitamin D and nothing brought my levels up. It all makes sense now after my ChRCC diagnosis. I am very curious if anybody else has experienced the same vit D deficiency?

Vitamin D
I was put on Vitamin D 2 years ago. I remain deficient. But one of my best friends and my ex wife were also put on them. My primary care doc said they had recently made some recommendation to supplement Vitamin D and that was the reason so many were being told to take it.
Interestingly, I just saw in the news 2-3 days ago that a very recent study showed no improvement in bone health from taking these Vitamin D supplements.

In order for your body to absorb vit d, you need magnesium. Magnesium is essential for the absorption and metabolism of vit d. It is considered that we are all low in magnesium, so often taking vit d alone is not always beneficial. It is also recommended that when taking vit d, vit k2 should also be included. Vit d aids with the absorption of calcium but vit k is required to direct it to the bone.
Here in France to improve bone density they prescribe silica, vit d, vit k and magnesium. I take the first three in capsule form, but magnesium in transdermal form.

I was put on vitamin D supplements 2 years ago, because of a serious deficiency. I take Vit D3 4000 IU daily, and will have to take it the rest of my life, says my doctor. Never knew it had to do with my ChRCC.
The very best way to get your vitamin D is by exposure to the sun daily. Preferably, if possible, at high noon. In the summer you need at least 15 minutes in the sun - and with no suntan lotion. You will need more than that in the winter months.

Vitamin D is an essential "nutrient" for your immune system. It's not just about your bones.

I don't go out in the hot sun without sunscreen, due to squamous cell skin cancer history. Also basal cell, but the squamous cell keeps the sunscreen on this lily white body. My PC dr didn't mention taking magnesium along with the Vit D3 daily. I'll have a talk with him when I see him next. Thanks for the heads up. I have no bone density problems except a small area of osteopenia in my left hip.

My motherHi Tillie,
My mother suffered from osteoporosis, she was placed on a calcium supplement which she took for several years. Her bones used to break so easily even though she was having treatment. When I moved to France they automatically tested for osteoporosis. It was found that I had osteopenia of my left hip and pelvis.
Apparently the first signs normally appear in the left hip. Anyway! I had to see a specialist, I thought they would place me on calcium, but we went through my diet and he determined that I was ingesting sufficient amounts already. I was placed on a blend of organic silica, marine lipids, sea water extract vit d. I am adjusting my diet to hopefully increase my vit k intake more naturally. The magnesium tablets were like trying to swallow a horse pill, so I opted for transdermal.
I know that Neil is right about vit d being important for your overall health, I am hoping I am getting enough. I spend a lot of time outside so I should be getting plenty from natural sunshine too.

Vitamin D and Kidneys
Can anybody tell me if the kidneys play a part in producing Vitamin D? I spend all my time in the sun so I know it cant just be that.
