BREAST MASS DISCOVERED WITH CT SCAN - UPDATE 10-16-13

The breast cancer specialist and her PA both agree it's probably cancer, about 90% sure. Will get scheduled for a mammogram and biopsy, ASAP. Not smooth, like my gyn/onc told me, but irregular, vertical, 1/2", but movable. No indications in lymph nodes, but will check those as well. I'm still holding good thoughts that the 10% NO CANCER is going to win out!

My gynecologic/oncologist says it is roundish, smooth, movable. He wants me to have a stereotatic biopsy. Will be calling tomorrow to try to set up an appointment. And because I like to be 'informed' and 'prepared' I looked up the procedure on youtube. Seems pretty straight forward, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on this - ease of the procedure, pain/discomfort, etc.

Hello, everyone. I'm from the Ovarian Cancer discussion board. DX in 2000, recurrance in 2006. NED as of last week's CT scan - YAY! However, there is a notation on the findings that reads as follows" mass in right breast, 10 o'clock position, 11 mm, posterior 1/3. I will be seeing my gynecologic/oncologist on Wednesday for my OVCA follow-up. I know he will order a mammogram (last one in April 2012).

Can anyone offer some advice/comfort? I have been genetically tested and am NOT positive for BRCA. I am in general good health, and I did detect a small lump in that breast myself last week. I've researched a little, and as you can imagine it opens up a lot of questions and concerns. The lump I'm feeling is not in the 10 o-clock position, so I'm not sure what I'm feeling.

I know that no one can say anything for sure, but anything you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Lots of other things it could be!

There are lots of things it could be and it might just be benign. Don't google and wait until you see your oncologist.

Point out what you believe is another lump when there, it could be nothing. Try not to worry too much (but you will naturally) let's see results first, the we can all chat. Good luck.

Glad you have that appointment Wed

so you can figure out what's going on. I won't say don't worry because once we've heard those words "you have cancer" we're going to worry. You might want to be proactive and schedule that mammogram on your own to get the ball rolling. You're overdue anyway. Waiting until Wednesday is not going to change anything, tho, and your gyn/onc might want to order an ultrasound at the same time given the CT results.

I had both breast and endometrial cancers and they have the same risk factors. but they were unrelated, both primary. I don't know about ovarian and breast, but breast cancer is often estrogen dependent and we are women. It's my understanding that most cancers do not metastasize to the breast, so if this is breast cancer (I hope it's not), it's most likely a new primary cancer.

I'll be waiting to hear what your gyn/onc wants to do. Lots of support here. I hope this turns out to be benign.

Breast and Ovarian cancer are

Breast and Ovarian cancer are related. I have read that having breast cancer increases your chance of ovarian cancer (as well as others). I don't know if it is vice-versa.

Just because you are in good health or testing negative for the BRCA gene doesn't mean you can't get cancer.

That being said, I know it is hard NOT to be nervous.

I recently had a mass on my lung removed. For some reason, I could get my mind in a place where I was concerned, but not the point where I was freaking out, panicked, totall worried. I was pretty calm about the whole thing. I hope you find how to get there,too.

Before I had my breast cancer surgery, the surgeon ordered an MRI. A mass showed up on the non-cancerous breast. I chose to have that breast removed (as well as the cancerous breast) removed without biopsing it. It turned out to be PASH, a benign tumor (but needed to be surgically removed anyway).

There are many things in the breast that can show up on scans and mammos.

I know it is hard, but try not to worry until you hear the word cancer.

Do you have an appointment?

I had an ultrasound guided core biopsy and it was painless (after numbing). I have minimal discomfort after. Hope your experience is similar and your results are benign.

I believe this would be the same type of biopsy, although some of the ladies on the OVCA board are not reporting very 'happy' thoughts on the test - pain, took relaxants beforehand.

Anyway, does anyone have a good recommendation for a breast care doctor in the Detroit, Michigan area? I have the one appointment, but it's in a health care system I don't generally use. So I'm calling tomorrow to see if I can get this other doctor - she is in the system I'm familiar with and is closer to home. Reviews on both doctors are good. Just curious if anyone can offer recommendations for my area.

Hi Monika,

I just finished treatment at U of M. I started out at Beaumont but because my husband is also being treated for cancer, we both went there. At Beaumont I was extremely impressed with Dr. Shannon Bongers. She was previously at Karmanos and was the surgeon for a friend who had surgery 5 years ago. My primary doc did not think it was cancer (calcifications) but she not only found the cancer but ordered an MRI where two more very small spots were found. U of M said they would NOT have done the MRI but needed to deal with it as there was now suspicion. Anyway I had a large lumpectomy at they did find 3 very small tumors (3mm and less). I would also recommend Dr. Lisa Newman at the U of M. She is head of breast cancer surgery and found an innovative way to take out all three lesions in two quadrants w/o a masectomy. I have finished radiation and will be taking AI. Now focused on my husband.

First of all, I am so sorry to hear that both you and your husband are going through this horrible disease. My thoughts and prayers to you both.

The first doctor that I do have an appointment with is Dr. Kuwajerwala (they call her Dr. K!). She was recommended, and I have no problem with Beaumont, but my OVCA oncologist is through the St. John Health Care System. I just thought maybe it would be easier to have instant access to all of my records.

It's so difficult to decide, as I want whoever it is to be thorough. And, if any additional tests/surgeries are needed, I also want to be sure this doctor willl be qualified.
