CT Scan is actually this morning

It is 12:00 noon and your scan is over hoping your anxiety is easing now.  I am praying for clear results for you!

I'ts over for today...except the results.  I came on today, not looking for sympathy, but just to be "around" others in the same boat...shaped like a kidney and has trouble moving in the water.

I was supposed to have a CT last week; but the afternoon prior, the hospital called home and left a message that it was cancelled!!! No reason given.  I called the oncology dept. and got a 3rd hand message about eGFR and labs being too low.  Earlier this week, the RN said the eGFR was 40 (which is good for only 1 kidney) and the Radiologist had conferred with the Oncologist-they could have given a CT without contrast and he said no to that.  Because of a blip in my thyroid, I've been on an every 3 month test routine of 3 AB/pelvis US and chest X-rays, followed by a CT for the past 2 years.

I have my appt. tomorrow and I have a bunch of questions/expectations for what's going to happen. I want answers.   I think the hospital has changed their rules about labs, etc. without notifying the referring doctors; and the patients are being caught int the middle

If you hear of a small earthquake off the Oregon coast, blame me, because I'm about ready to explode.

All of the crap this past week has ruined my anticipation of being clear for 5 years and a survivor for 7.  

At least I don't have to deal directly with the feds for medical care like Alehan.  My regrets to you both.  My small business provides medical/dental/eye/Rx as a benefit; and Oregon still doesn't have their website quite ready as the new program begins.  Even as an employer/employee, we have a hard time trying to figure out what to do because the new insurance rates haven't been determined, yet.

Comparison: September 23, 2013

 

Findings: Axial images were acquired at 3.8 mm intervals from the dome of the diaphragm to the floor of the pelvis without the use of intravenous contrast.

 

Lung windows demonstrate several stable rounded calcific densities consistent with an old healed granulomatous process such as histoplasmosis. No suspicious masses are seen. No pleural effusion or pneumothorax is identified.

 

Liver windows demonstrate the visualized spleen to be unremarkable given the limitation of the study without the use of intravenous contrast. A small hypodensity is identified adjacent to the gallbladder fossa within the medial aspect of the right lobe of the liver. Measures approx 3mm in AP dimension and is too small accurately characterize on this exam. Statistically this is most likely a cyst. The liver is otherwise unremarkable in appearance.

 

Bone windows demonstrate age appropriate degenerative change within the spine and bony skeleton. No suspicious blastic or lytic lesions.

 

Soft tissue windows demonstrate the visualized heart and mediastinal structures to be unremarkable in appearance. Once again calcifications are identified within the lung bases and a very small hypodensity is seen within the medial aspect of the right lobe of the liver. The spleen, pancreas, adrenal glands and stomach are unremarkable in appearance. Stable cysts are identified in both kidneys. The previously seen right sided hydronephrosis and hydroureter have decreased. The previously seen stone is no longer radiographically evident. Visualized bowel bladder and prostrate are unremarkable. No suspicious adenopathy is seen.

 

Impression: 

1. Resolution of the previously seen right sided hydronephrosis as well as ureteral stone.

2. Very small hypodensity within medial aspect of right lobe of liver anteriorly. Statistically this likely a small cyst.

3. Old healed granulomatous process.

 

This is exactly what all of the report says.

A couple of cysts but no cancer,yeah!! Congratulations! I am so pleased for you! Perhaps you should take a short break with that lovely family of yours, to relax and destress. Put all of this behind you now!

Well I talked to the radiologist who read the ct scan today on the phone.Update: He said that he did indeed look at the contrast images and that the report was correct but it was a new system and he just erroneously typed it was without contrast. He is doing addendum for me. I said did you see anything that looked like cancer he said no but you do have several cyst. I just picked up the addendum/amended report. Here is exactly what it says:

REPORT HAS BEEN AMENDED.

Addendum 10/03/2013.

ADDENDUM: CT/ABDWPO.

addendum: The study was performed with and without the use of intravenous contrast.Numerous simple appearing cysts are seen within each kidney.

 

 

That is good news... But my appointment with my urologist is today at 3:10; will he go along with these or will he look to see if the radiologist is right? I'm kind of scared he might interptet the images different and still give me other news today. Does that ever happen? Appointment is coming up...could he see something different?

Doctors defer to radiologists when it comes to reading scans.  Your doctor will probably tell you that cysts are very common and nothing to worry about.  The words "You might have cancer." can be a life altering event in a good or bad way, stay positive and don't allow the negative to consume you.  Accept this for the great news that it is and be thankful that you did not have to go through the initiation normally required to become a full fledged member of the club.  We love to hear good news around here, it doesn't happen often enough.

Thank you everyone. Life is so precious and I will try to never take a day for granted. Urologist said all was ok; I don't deserve this mercy but I am thankful. The courage and support is wonderful and I am thankful to know you all. 

Touchdown, I was going to ask you on my previous post if they said anything about having water in the kidney (hydrophenosis) which they said cleared up.  That may have been what they saw that was 2.8 cm's.  That could also have been an infection from the lodged kidney stone, it happens alot.  So, according to this report you have simple cysts on both kidneys. If it were me, I would ask for an ultrasound just to be on the safe side. That can also check the cyst on the liver as well. I would also, without a doubt, ask for a repeat in three months time to ensure stability. But, I would say you can relax now, it seems to be all good!  Cysts are very common!  About the kidney stones....  I get them alot.  I use Kidney complete and also chanca piedra to naturally melt the stones.  I take it each week as a maintenace dose because i suddenly started to get stones in my right kidney last year.  They are natural products.  Hope you dont' mind i mentioned it to you! I also put a few lemon slices in my water each day and try to eat an apple a day. That all helps to avoid stones.  Every little bit helps! Have a great weekend! You deserve it!
