Concerned and Introduction

in Kidney Cancer #1

Hi Everyone,

My husband started having back pain in Nov 2012. He's always been the picture of health and in 20 years of marriage, I've seen him sick only once.... well, until now. Anyway, after test after test, in Febuary 2013 he was determined to have a 2cm tumor on his left kidney. A partial Nemphrectomy was done in March and everyone assured us it went perfectly well and that his odds of living a long healthy life were very good. All he needed to do was have his scans every 6 months for 2 years and then once per year after that.

His 1st scan was a few weeks ago and they saw a "lesion" on same kidney. Also, he has a broken back but that's another story! They say it could be scar tissue or something else. They don't know. He had a chest xray and it may show thickening of the pleural lining of his lungs. They say this could be many things. I swear, they don't know much at all. So now he's off to a hospital next week, 6 hours away. He'll be there for several days for more tests and to see a specialist. As always, he's as positive as usual and I'm trying to hold it together and not scare my kids but I am worried. It all sounds ominous to me. Have any of you ever experience a thicking of lung lining with no sign ( so far ) of nodules? Could this all just be coincidence as hubby thinks?

I am amazed every day how cancer can alter perception. It seems there are times when one just survives, waiting for one test or another. It takes a great deal of bravery and you all have my deepest respect.

    Alehan,

         I am so sorry to have to meet you here, but you will meet the best people here.  As far as the lesion on his kidney, I had my right kidney removed in August 2011, and at that time a mention of possible lesion on the left kidney would need to be watched.  I am happy to say when I had my CT Scan in June, the lesion on the left kidney is completely gone, so it was safe to say it was not cancer as I have had no treatment except for surgeries.  So it is possible that the same thing can be happening to your husband.  I know it is hard but try to be strong.  You have definately come to the right place for information, love, and people that just really care!  Sorry that you and your husband are here, but welcome and may this be a short stay!

    At 2 cm and if I were a betting man, I would put my money on it being nothing to worry about. While there are no guarantees in life your odds for a Kidney Cancer recurrance are very, very low een with an ambiguous xray.

    You both make me feel much better. I know I can be dramatic but this is the man with whom I want to grow old. If cancer has other ideas, you can bet it'll have a fight on it's hands.

    I hope that the lesion is

    I hope that the lesion is nothing to be concerned about and you can move on with your lives. As far as the pleural thickening, I can't imagine that that would indicate cancer. Although I'm no oncologist, I would think you would see nodules instead. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the testing indicates random weird benign stuff! Good luck!

     I also had my partial in March. I had my first scans done last week, they showed scar tissue but that is to be expected. Are they saying the lesion is at the surgery site or elsewhere on the kidney? I hope the up and coming tests dispel all of your fears:)

    The Concerns

    They told him that where it's located, it could well be scar tissue but the woman who gave him results said she wants him to see a specialist to be sure. We also found out that his surgeon's last report read that pathology needed further review but we never heard a thing. Last we knew, it was clear cell carcinoma and clean margins. Problem is, hubby is military and both he and his surgeon left duty station ( Germany ) shortly after surgery. So, yeah... I feel like we were never told everything, I guess. We were never given a stage nor grade but on my own, I figured out it was stage 1 but have no idea about grading or whatnot. It's frustrating because from what I can tell, military docs generally seem rushed and that's the last thing we need.

    Me too!

    I hope it's all random, benign stuff too. What I can find about pleural thickening has to do with abestos. I don't -think- he's been epsed overly much so I just don't know!
