Mom had her port removed

Hi everyone. Sorry I haven't posted in a while.

Mom had her port removed on Monday and did well. It was scheduled for a week ago but they saw a problem with her EKG and wanted to compare it to an older one. It checked out and they went ahead with the surgery yesterday. 

It was just an out patient procedure. I think the procedure took only about 15 minutes, but with her age (82), we were there for a while. The nurses wanted to make sure she was ok before letting her go. They wanted to give her some pain meds but she refused. She actually has had no pain. The only thing that bothered her was she couldn't eat the morning of the procedure :) Other than that, she is doing great.

    I am so glad that your mum's port removal went well.  Don't you just find the nursing staff wonderful. It sounds like they really took good care of her.

    I get to have my port removed on Friday, and I've been quite apprehensive about it being done under a local anesthetic.  I guess its the needle thing. I don't think I'll ever get used to them. 

    I hope your mum continues to do well.

    Thank you for your well wishes. Actually, my Mom said she would have left her port in forever if she could. She hates hospitals and her number one reason is getting the needle for the IV. So don't feel bad about the needle thing. Mom said she can handle any pain, just don't do the needle thing, LOL. 

    I hope your procedure goes well on Friday. We will be thinking of you.

    I like your mum

    She hates hospitals and her number one reason is getting the needle for the IV.

    This is the reason my cancer got to stage 3B. I didn't go in for a colonoscopy at 50 because I didn't want the IV. If I had gone in then maybe it would have been in the earlier stages.

    I have had a port since Jan 2010. Had Chemo until Aug 2010. Oncologist did not push removal and with regular clearing I have had no issues. I am facing 6 months of Xeloda (orally) for a sucessful VATS removal of a 2cm lung nodule. Your alls simple proceedure to remove port kinda encourages to go ahead and get mine outta there also. Antbody know of anyone who had a new one put back in after a recurrance?

    I waited 'til I was 77 for my first colonoscopy because I couldn't stsnd the golightly.  Dumb me!!!We do pay for our mistakes don't we?

    We had a thread about this very subject just a few weeks ago.  Several posted that they had more than one port with no probelms.

    Congratulations on getting the port out.  I've been putting it off suddenly for fear of pain I guess.  I've sort of had enough but now I'm thinking well if your 82 mother can do it so can I!  lol  So silly what we think sometimes in our heads.  I'm really glad your mom is done with treatment.  At 82 you deserve to just relax and live peacefully.

    Hi Helen,

    Thank you for your reply. If you are able to get the port out and want to, you should. Mom still has no pain from the surgery. She just doesn't like the needle for the IV's. They didn't even use stitches, just some glue.

    Keep us posted if you decide to get yours done.
