1 yr survivor, new to boards, wanted to say thank you
Hi,
I am coming up on my one year anniversary. I was diagnosed on 9/26/12 with dcis. I then had a lumpectomy followed by radiation. I am now taking Tamoxifen.
I am active with my local Relay for Life event. I have been on the committee and a team captain for about 8 years and am now co-chairing the event. I am also very involved with the Susan G Komen 3-Day walk. I have done the 3-Day for 5 years - this past one marked my first time as a survivor. I also ran the Race for the Cure on Mother's Day because I thought the idea of running a 5K with my family was a good idea after I was diagnnosed. I was going to show cancer that it couldn't beat me. I am NOT a runner and it was MUCH harder than I thought, but I did it! I crossed that finish line!
I am also a volunteer with ACS Reach to Recovery program and will be participating in my first Making Strides for Breast Cancer later this year.
With all that I have done and learned in the process, I found myself with no idea who to turn to to ask advice when I was feeling some pain on my side yesterday. So, I turned to these discussion boards and I am so thankful I did. I got a few replies and they helped ease my mind tremendously!
I just wanted to say THANK YOU! I am so happy I found you all. I hope I could help someone else along their journey, too
Be well,
Keri

Thank you. It was very emotional crossing that finish line after I set that challenge to myself to run the race after my diagnosis.... no matter how long it took to "run" (my husband kind of walked beside me while I did my version of running) those 3 miles.
Maybe I will give it another try in 2014.....

Thank you. I have walked and crewed the 3-Day for 5 years now. I highly highly highly recommend participating if you are able to. You could walk, crew, volunteer or just go stop by a cheering station. I participated long before I was ever diagnosed and I was hooked. Now, it has become personal, but the overwhelming sense of love and community can't be matched.
Have a good day,
Keri

You sure are involved! Good for you... I did the first few years after initial diagnosis, ins company that team captain worked for doubled pledges ifnthere was a survivor on the team so that was.me... then my company put me down to rep. at the dinner here for ACS... But failed to tell me and I wwas suppose to be a speaker. I was working lol. They called my cell to see where I was. I found the walks and dinner very emotional, this year did Survivors to the Summit at the top of Ski Resort, Had to take the tram, which was quite a challenge, but very rewarding to raise funds for our Cancer Wellness Hose. I am always proud of those with the energy to do all of this... I now only do the event here or there.
Welcome to this site, wr have a great group of men and womrn who I have always found to be an invaluable source of info and support.
Best to you,

Best to you,
CarolThe thing is...I was involved long before breast cancer was ever a word in my vocabulary. Now my involvement is personal. I want to be around when a cure is found and I want to know I helped (even a tiny bit) to find it.
Nice to "meet" you!
