Blood work
I am about to have some blood work, but I would like to ask my doctor to add some extra ones.
Does anyone have any advice as to what type of blood work I should get done besides CMP, CBC, CA125, anf Glucoses?
I want to have my cholesterol checked as well, lipid panel. Last time, my glucoses were with range but on the high range.
Thank you!

Hi Fayard
I'm from the ovarian cancer board but I also lurk here a lot. I just had my annual physical last week and will have follow-up blood work done later this week. My primary doc is having me get the same things tested as you, plus my thyroid gland (TSH w/reflex T-4, Free). I don't have any history of problems with my thyroid but I think this is one of things she routinely has her patients get checked out.
Hoping you have good outcomes to your blood work.

Earlier this year, it was determined that I have a small cyst in my right thyroid lobe. It was found by accident during an ultrasound to check one of my salivary glands for stones. (My salivary gland was swelling when I ate and my doc suspected a smal stone. My salivary gland is now back to normal.) My primary doc and my oncologist are not worried about the thyroid lobe cyst because of its very small size but I'll have a follow-up ultrasound in about six months or so. That must be why my blood work includes a check of my thyroid gland.

Thank you for yourKelly,
Thank you for your input. I greatly appreciate it. I have a small nodule in my thyroid as well, so I will have that check also for sure. I had an ultrasound and a neddle aspiration biopsy, which came out negative thank God!.
Thanks again!

Wow, I wonder if it's pretty common to have nodules and cysts in the thyroid? I'm so glad that your ultrasound and needle biopsy came back negative. Yes, I think you and I should have our thryoid checked through our blood work, just to be safe!
Take care,

The blood tests you are having, are what I have done routinely. Glucose is part of your CMP. I too have a lipid profile done yearly as well as thyroid. I have had Vit D level checked also. Hope you get good results of everything. A lot of times the glucose is high from the steroids taken.

Ro,
Thank you for your input. I had Vit D checked for the first time a couple of years ago.
Surpringsingly, my levels were fine! I am not taking any prescription medication at the moment.
How are you?

Spectracell blood test
Hi - Not sure if you would be interested in this but my mom's naturopath ordered something called a spectracell blood test for her. It is a detailed analysis of your immune profile with detailed results about vitamin, mineral, amino acids, antioxidants, carbohydrate metabolism, metabolites and an overall immunidex. Her naturopath recommended vitamin C, B12, calcium, and zinc supplementation as a result of this test. It can give you a very detailed idea of where you might want to supplement your diet. My mom got this while she had active cancer and is battling to get to NED status so I am not sure if it would be of interest to you to have these results as you are in a very different place but thought I would mention it just in case.

Thanks for bringing this up,
Thanks for bringing this up, Fayard
I have been feeling extremely fatigue and have gained 10 pounds for no reason and now can't lose it. I don't feel like doing anything. I just asked my doctor to give me a prescription for a blood test. I hadn't had a CA 125 test done for about 5 years (it was never a factor), but with the way I have been feeling I thought it wouldn't hurt. I also asked him to check my Thyroid because I believe all of my symptoms (including joint pain) may be related to this. The Thyroid controls the all of the cells and since I have had chemo and brachytherapy, I am not sure what the long term effects could be on the thyroid. I was just wondering if I should ask for any other blood tests too.
I will let you know if I am able to get these tests and let you know my results.

I've been thinking along these lines of needing more bloodwork myself. AFterall, not everything is related to cancer. I haven't had my thyroid tested in a while - and I, too have nodules that should be checked I think. That used to be done fairly regularly (before cancer). Ro mentioned Vitamin D - mine is low and is tested regularly. I was wondering about B-12 the other day, too. I think I had my lipids done about a year ago. I should check. And then I guess I should get around to making an appointment with my pcp. Cancer seems to trump about everything and it shouldn't get to do that!
Let me know what you're all doing. I'll get around to making that appointment in the next month or so.

Hello, love,
Have you considered having a CR-P? It will show your general inflammation level. Doctors like to see it at less than 1. I try to have it done as mine has been over 9.6. Inflammation is related to cancer. Hope you are doing well, and are just having a routine check-up, think of you often.

testing the Lympocytes, your absolute CD 4, 8, helper/supressor ratio etc... This is a direct test of your immune system and strength of your "killer" and helper cells. Naturopaths tend to do it but you might be able to convince a dr to do it as well.
