I tried wine a little while back and it was a definite no no! It was like drinking rubbing alcohol and burnt the hell out of my mouth. Today was one of those beautiful summer days that begs for a beer so I picked up some when I did the shopping. I figured worst case Marcia will drink it and use it for cooking. I'm a huge fan of dark beers, porters, stouts and the like, but I figured I'd start light so I bought Sierra Nevada Kellerweis. It's a lighter sweet beer that I've enjoyed in the past....perfect for a summer day.

Soooo.... I poured a glass and much to my surprise, I was absolutely fine with it. No burn at all and even the carbonation didn't bother me. What a relief! The taste was just glorious! Just the thing I needed to boost my spirits (literally) and make me realize I'm returning to abi-normal :)

    Cheers...

    Awesome...

You'll get there more and more...., just a long slow process with taste and saliva in some of us... I think you made an excellent choice for your beer of the day.

    Enjoy,

    John

    Ya know....

If I were to take up drinking again, the first thing I'd get is an ice cold beer....it's the only drink I miss.

A while ago, I bought a quart of beer for slug bait in my flower gardens....I just had to sniff it, since I hadn't smelled it in years.....and I heard rock 'n' roll...no kidding.....specifically Jackson Brown's Roadie Song...LOLOLOL.....very weird, but it happened...

    Ahhhh, your taste buds are

Ahhhh, your taste buds are returning Cool

For me, beer and wine are still terrible (I'm 14 mo post tx) but my brother in law, who works for Miller-Coors, brought over some Fox Barrel Pacific Pear Cider last week. A little sour at first but my buds came around. Only 4.5% alcohol but I had a huge buzz after one bottle since I haven't had any alcohol since April of last year.

i hate to b the party pooper here, but i thot HNC patients could no longer drink alcohol of any kind as it could cause the cancer to come back.  i don't remember where i read that but i know i did read it somewhere.  has anyone else here heard this?  for those of u who like ur wine and beer, i hope i'm wrong.  Laughing

    Different Thoughts/Different MD's

From what I have read from many creditable Cancer Sites, and my MD's that moderation wouldn't increase the chances of recurrence anymore than anything else in excess...

My thinking is that all of the rads, and scans probably increase our chances for a secondary cancer down the road, more than a few beers now and then.

    Hi T,

I am saving that experience for celebration to wash down the “boatload” of fish John and I catch under the Skyway Bridge.

    Got to dream,

    No Professional...

Like Shelby says, "Do not do what I do..., Don't do it...", LOL.

I am in no way a professional, so I can't say if or if not you should drink a few...

    Everything in Moderation

I read as well the alcohol is detrimental and can increase the chances of a recurrance but it was for moderate to heavy drinkers (2+ drinks a day). That kind of consumption isn't healthy without having had cancer. Obviously, tobacco use is totally out but I recall reading (I think here) that a cigar once in a great while wouldn't trigger a recurrance. For, me, I know smoking and hard drinking through the years along with HPV was the cause of my cancer and as much as I would love to enjoy a good stogie on a special occasion, I won't be doing so.

At this point, a cold beer with a meal once in a while is fine and poses little or no risk. My docs are Ok with it.

    Cheers!

Here's to abi-normal. If it was not so early in the morn I would hoist one fer ya but that will wait until after a rowdy meeting I have scheduled for 5:00 PM.

I am planning on meeting up with John in a few weeks when in Florida for coffee. Now if Matt was also there then, we could do Dunkin Donuts with a baskin Robbins on the side so I could do that banana split I promised him. T, if you could also come we could move you up to some Jameson for one hell of a chaser.  Life is good

    Enjoy the day

I found out that I was having

I found out that I was having the same problem with Beer, burning mouth and throat, so decided to try different beers, found out that I could drink Guiness, Stout, Beck's, Budveiser, cobra, kingfisher  and similar light coloured beers (Almost lagers) without any difficulty, can drink british keg beers relatively ok but sometimes get a burning sensation dependant on the alcohol content of them. For wine I normally have 2/3 glass wine mixed with 1/3 lemonade this is a reasonable compromise but can still burn

hope you enjoy finding what beer you can now drink

Adjusting to your new normal will not be very hard because anything is better then what you just been through. I am glad to see the taste buds are coming back and that you are able to do things you once loved to do.

    Taste

    Thanks Hondo,

For whatever reason, I never lost my taste buds. Even my RO shrugs his shoulders. Some things were a little "off" but other than that, I could taste everything. Eating it was another issue! ~lol~

Now, with the exception of certain foods and spicy stuff, I can eat and taste everything. It's still chew chew sip swallow for the most part but even that's improving. You're spot on that being able to enjoy things after what we've been through makes us apprciate them all the more :)

    CHEERS!

Hey T, that's great news, which comes at a good time during the dog days of August; bottoms up!  I'm glad to hear that you have finally been able to have such a delightful spiritual experience, I'll toast you the next time that I have one.  And the journey continues........

    rads tweaked my beer buds

I used to dislike the lite stuff, Budweiser Coors, etc. Now, I like the clean refreshing taste of the lite stuff. Some of the heavy IPAs are less satisfying than before, just as well as they run twice the alcohol. drink on!  in moderation that is :-)

    Funny you mention this

i am now 8 1/2 months post treatment-i was in my favorite restaurant last week and had a glass of wine - it was the first time i could actually taste the flavor of the wine.i mentioned this to the waitress and she brought a half of carafe -taste was not 100% but maybe 80%. i use to make my own but have stopped because i couldnt taste it anymore. it was a  very good day. Also i now once again enjoy a cocktail after work 2 or 3 times a week. really besides my voice being a lot raspier than it use to be, a little saliver issue , ringing in the ear and a dash of neuropathy i am almost normal.

about the stogies - my daughter gets married in 3 weeks - i use to really enjoya cigar when playing cards - would bring back cubans twice a year from our vacation home - obviously i dont smoke anymore, however one thing i insisted on for the wedding was a guy in full cubana dress rolling fesh cigars for the reception. i may try one.

so enjoy your beer you deserve it

    what you fancy

Mum always said a little bit of what you fancy does you good. I don't smoke or drink but was wondering about E-lites (electric cigarettes)do they curb your longing for a ciggie. My partner has smoked in the house for the 30 years I've been with him, I bought him e-lites for his b'day and they aren't cheap but he refuses to try them,I always smell of tobacco on my clothes and in my hair and had the acrid taste in my throat. I had said to him in the past that his smoke cant be good for me but he just poo poo-ed it, sometimes getting quite cross about it. He now smokes only in one room when I'm not in it and if its a nice day he's sits on the garden bench. I feel a lot better now the smoke doesn't give me an acrid taste. When I was diagnosed with a drinker/smoker cancer  I said I could have got it from being a long term passive smoker but he doesn't go for that. How can you tell a ciggie addict that smoking is bad for you. He says you have to die from something. He says his health is fine (except for a chronic cough in the morning and he pants walking up the garden path).  He has said he feels sorry now he didn't listen to me and realises how unpleasant it was for me and anyone visiting but he didn't 'think'.  Please all smokers think of others who don't smoke.
