    Mastectomy done

    Sorry, I have not been online.  I had my surgery on July 5th stayed in hospital for 3 days. Yes I hated the drain,  I even gave it a name JP"  lol.  They finally took the drain out w weeks later and was told that I will not need Radiation and more then likely no Chemo Yay,  Thank you God.  My Dr wanted to do some more tests to make sure about the Chemo,  not sure why but maybe he wants to make sure.  I was also told that I was Stage 2A.

    Trying to keep a positive attitude but sometimes that is hard especially when I look at my chest, even though I am happy the cancer is gone.  May be I can ask you girls. . . . after the surgery is it over?  I mean, is it like going back to normal before the cancer was found?  or is this something I will have to deal with or live with the rest of my life?  Sorry for the questions I am sure many of them are silly but just gotta ask.

    I am happy to see a post from you . . Glad all went well - that JP drain tube (s) is annoying, but necessary as I had been told over, and over again. LOL

    I was devastated at the way my new chest looked after my bilateral mastectomy - I am not going to sugar coat it,  My disposition and attitude did soften as time went on.  Please note that I had tissue expanders inserted at the time of surgery...

    Fast forward several months - felt good, TE fully filled - exchange surgery scheduled .. we went on vacation - I contacted a staph infection - hospitalized for 5 days, emergency surgery followed.   I walked around around for several months - lopsided - 1 fully expanded breast, 1 flat -- funny thing,  I got used to it - choosing to wear larger shirts, nothing form fitting. 

    Do 'we' get used to our new look - yes, in time.  Is it difficult on most days, yes.  Do we live to tell our story, yes.

    That is great that you won't have to take chemo.  I hope you heal quickly.

    De,

    I had an unilateral mastectomy in Feb. I am still adapting to how I feel/look. though I am not vain about looks, it's more about how clothes fit. Right now I am looking into a prophylactic mastectomy and reconstruction. Yes, Cancer is always in the back of your mind, altho not cosuming my life. It's especially hard when it's time for any kind of tests.  But then you get past it, and thank God for your life and continue on.

    I'm sure you've found that it was not a painful surgery. That's b/c you don't have very many nerves in your breasts. I had more discomfort with lumpectomy and axillary dissection 4 yrs ago.

    I hope you have a very supportive network of friends and family. Mine have been wonderful and step up to help me every time I need them. Support groups can be helpful, too. Praying you have some peace of mind and are healing well.
