Update on Test Results
Since you all were so kind to board the pink bus with me last Monday, I thought I would let you all know the results of the tests. The good news first --- the gyno and the ultra sound all came back negative. Yippee!!!!! Now, the not so good news. My DEXA Scan was not good at all. I've been diagnosed with osteoporosis of the lumbar spine. My Vitamin D levels were at 17 - very low. So now my onc has referred me to the Mineral Metabolism dept for a complete workup and evaluation. She says we have to get this addressed! I am not sure what all of this will entail, but I'm not liking any of this. I am waiting for a call to set up the appointment for the initial evaluaiton. Have any of you had this after radiation?
Yesterday I started on my five year journey with tamoxifen. So far so good. No SE, but then again I don't know how long it takes ,if you are going to have SE, for them to show up. I'm guessing it probably takes longer than two days.

So glad that you got great results on your gyno and ultra sound. I will be praying that your vitamin D levels go up and that you will have no side effects from the tamoxifen.

Hi
Great news about the ultrasound and the gyno visit!! I know there are many ways to address your osteoporosis and low vitamin D levels, so try to stay calm until you see your doctor. As far as the tamoxifen, I did really good on that. I took it for 2 and a half years until I had to switch to Aromasin (after hysterectomy). The worst SE I had was hot flashes. I just can't remember when they started.

All Have Solutions!
Dear Grannabeth,
Tamoxifen is an excellent drug but like all prescription medicine it does have side effects. Some you can live with it and some you have to know when to see a gynecologist. I had some problems with Tamoxifen which I used for 4 years.
Radiation did not cause me osteoporosis but Aromatase Inhibitors did. AI as they are know do deprieve one's body of estrogen. I was probably at the age also to develop the condition. I began to use Fosamax, then Boniva. In my case they caused me to have uveitis but I never read of another who had my problem. Some do an IV infusion of Zometa and a new drug which name I have forgotten.
I also had low vitamin D and now take a supplement.
Good luck to you as you begin your journey on Tamoxifen. I am certain your doctor will find a way to help with your osteoporosis.
Best,
Doris

Congratulations! I hope that you do well on tamoxifen. If you do have side effects, let your oncologist know and hopefully he can help you.

Good news.
I started tamox a few days ago (July 11). So far the SE are (more frequent) hot flashes.
I see my Gyno doctor next Monday for the internal ultra sound and my DEXA scan is scheduled after 3 months.
I hope your Vit D levels will go up soon.

Thanks for asking
Sue, thanks for asking. I have noticed a few strange things going on. Have swelling in my feet and ankles so asked my surgeon when I was there for a follow up visit on Tuesday and she immediately sent me for a Doppler Scan. Thankfully the tech did not see any clots, but have not seen the final report, but I assume everything is as the tech indicated. Am also having some abdominal pain and have sent my medical onc an email to see if it is anything I should be concerned about. Also surgeon is sending me to physical therapist for lymphedema. I had no clue--I just thought it was scar tissue that was inhibiting my movements and it would go away. Other than this, the tamoxifen has not been so bad--I've been on it almost two weeks and not sure if that is a long enough time for SE to be showing up. Have any of you had these symptoms and did they show up this early on in your tamoxifen treatment?

Could any of that be a side effect of tamox Beth? I am glad you're seeing a pt for your lymphedema. It will help a lot!

Good news that there were no clots. I am not on tamox, so, I don't know how long it might take if you are going to have side effects. I hope you have none ever.
Thanks for the update.
