First Post OP scan today...results at the Lung Doc tomorrow

in Kidney Cancer #1

I am going for my first post op scans today.  Needless to say I am extremely nervous.  What I want to hear is "no new spots have been found and the "speck" of dust on the outside of your right lung has not grown or shrunk".  What kind of coping mechanisms did you all use to keep calm?  Also, does the nervousness get better as I get more scans in the future or will I feel this way EVERY scan?  My mind is in a million different directions.

    I remember the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc...

    I'm nearing the four year mark and for me the anxiety level is definitely lower, but I don't think it will ever go completely away.  The best way to cope is by finding something else, a hobby, a book, exercise, or work if you have to, anything that requires a mental focus for a sustained period of time.  You are going to be fine.

    Second Scan

    Hi Nyisles

     

    I hope everything worked out earlier this week  and look forward to hearing from you.  I had my second scan this week.  I wish I had some words of wisdom but the truth is I was more neverous then I was the first time.  I also had a horrible feeling of dread I did not have before either the surgery or my first scan. Although I am at high risk of reoccurrence, it turned out NED.  Of course the Radiologist had to point out the calcifications on my  coronary arteries to prevent a perfect day! I don't think there is an answer.  Every day really is a gift.

    Not the news I wanted to hear

    Got my results and did not like them too much. Found that 2 new spots popped up on the outside of the left lung and 1 new spot on the right.  The "speck of dust" on my right lung was still small but did get slightly bigger.  All the nodules are on the outside of the lung from 15 to 24mm.  Also 2 fluid pockets in my left that my lung doc said he can fix in 20 minutes.  My lung doc said I should go for IL-2.  Even though all the spots are able to be surgically resected, he thinks it will only delay me for the treatment I really need.  Good news besides all them being in a surgical path, there seemed to be no spread (liver, bones, pancres, etc.).  My lung doc even said that the "new" spots may have been there all along but were too small to show up on scan or camera at the time.  Going to see my urologist tomorrow and then going to pick an IL-2 center.  Does anyone know how I can find info out about each hospital, like how many IL-2 cases they did, how many died, how many were successful, etc?

    It is so frustrating that every renal oncologist seems to have a different approach.  If I remember, you have had a number of consultations after your surgery Still, you might want to have one more.  I don't understand why if all mets can be removed surgicially, the oncologist would want HD IL 2 at this juncture.  I believe all experienced hospitals now have protocols to administer IL 2 savely but I am not sure the percentage of patients with a total or partial response varies much. I am luckly in that I live just outside New York City so I have access to different alternatives.  I know nothing about medicine or biology but I don't know why the oncologist wouldn't want to save the IL 2 option until there were no alternatives.
