"The Cancer Ward" recommended reading

The Cancer Ward is a semi-autobiographical novel by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, first published in 1967, and banned in the Soviet Union in 1968. The novel tells the story of a small group of terminal patients in the hospital "cancer Wing # 13" in 1955 in the post-Stalinist Soviet Union.

This is not an easy beach read by any means; but it is the most moving and life-affirming book, the perfect balance of depression and hope. I read The Cancer Ward in Russian for the first time 30 years ago; I read it again last year after I got diagnosed and I enjoyed it much more from a totally different perspective.

    I was just thinking the other day how little I read these days.  The book sounds interesting and intriguing.  I may just try it this summer.

    By the way, your new picture of a "little Alexandra" is really sweet - you were a cutey-pie!
