I have to admit, I am addicted to many HGTV shows, like House Hunters and Love it or List it. Patrick and I like to watch Shark Tank together and say, we didn't we think of that? Of course we love our Philly sports teams, baseball in the summer, ice hockey in the winter. And Downton Abbey is greatly missed at the moment, can't wait for the new season.
Have to say that watching a bit of TV does not make us "couch potatoes", it just takes us away for a time, and there is nothing wrong with that!

How old is your daughter? Because SOTD is such a family fave with me and my older kids (adults, more or less), my 9 year old keeps agitating to see it. He loves zombies and wants to watch zombie movie, but I haven't been able to find one that seems suitable. Who knew it would be so hard to find a family-friendly movie involving people-eating monsters?

when it first came out and daughter was 16 at the time. Now she is 25 and it still is one of our all time faves! We also enjoyed "Hot Fuzz" but it didn't quite reach the love we have for SOTD. And while it is a very funny movie, it still has a lot of blood and gore so it's a tough call for you on letting your son watch.
And my daughter and I both loved the book "World War Z" but she refuses to see the movie because she read that they changed it drastically for the big screen and that made her angry...lol.

movies- best in show, the national treasure franchise, and I've started to watch film noir - some are really good and some are awful! I love the princess bride also, and yes, the Harry potters. downton abbey? Oh yeah!

Mostly Disposable TV....(at this juncture)
Pawn Stars......American Pickers......Swamp People.....Duck Dynasty.....Toy Hunter.....Cajun Pawn Stars....Storage Wars....even checked out Shipping Wars
Those are easy and disposable when they are over...you can simply forget 'em.
It doesn't provide the escape you mention....but it's a temporary diversion during the week and something you can blow through in less than a 1/2 hour that doesn't require any big mental or emotional committment.
Waiting on the last few episodes this summer for the conclusion of Breaking Bad.....this is not good television and doesn't make you feel particulary good when you're done with it.....I can only watch one episode at a time, because you sort of walk away feeling dirty, you know? The Shield was sort of like that too, but it was a train wreck and hard to avert your eyes....I check out the occasional Sopranos rerun too.
As for movies, we don't get to watch very many...we finally wanted to see a comedy last week, so the first time in years we rented a movie..."Identify Theft."
It was entertaining in a painful kind of way....the gal that plays the thief (Melissa McCarthy) is so good - in a bad kind of way:) It's interesting to read what everyone is looking at.

Sums up my job perfectly...
Shot here in Dallas btw....and when you look at that movie, it's a period time piece of what Dallas buildings (work and apartments and restaurants) looked like...our first one looked like that:)

I love laughter
So I tend to watch comedies or amusing shows. The Big Bang Theory is one of my favorites because my husband is an electrical engineer, he doesn't see the humor in the show at all, but I guarantee I get a lot of laughs.
my second is Duck Dynasty, a bunch of wonderful family hanging together and happy happy happy. And a lot of laughter and smiles watching that show. Everyone but Uncle Si has a college degree, and they have a wonderful sense of humor towards one another.

Through treatment I watched
Through treatment I watched episodes of the Office. Made me laugh. I also enjoyed Mad Men and Big Love. A movie I really liked is "Jeff Who Lives at Home."
I think the Father of the Bride movies are always fun.
We have no cable so I just watch Netflix. When I've been in the hospital, I've gotten into some HGTV. (and I'll admit, "Say Yes to the Dress")
Currently I am watching Call the Midwife and episodes of the Dog Whisperer. I recently watched Nurse Jackie which I like but didn't want to watch when I was
in active treatment.
Last weekend I saw Identity Thief which was funny and naughty.
I enjoyed reading other people's responses. What a fun thread.

Oh yeah, you and Steve would get along well. He loves all those shows. There is one that follows a tow truck company and the whole show seems to be about people going crazy when their car is towed. There is a similar show that seems to involve people getting parking tickets and then going berserk. Isn't that one on TLC terrible. The one with all those little girls dressed up like hookers "Toddlers and Tiarras". Steve doesn't watch it, but the commercials kind of jump out at me.0 -

Then I watch on Tv, Crimin al minds, Castle, NCIS,Crossing borders is a new show that just started and I like it.
Duck Dynasty sometimes I loike it sometimes no patience for it. Anothet funny one is RV with Robin Williams and then ofcourse I love Survivor, the drama etc etc.
I have on demand so what I miss I can go back and see later. My daughter has netflix and maybe this winter I wil order it en see.

Netflix - Call the Midwife- may be off due to summer. Set in England working district. Three young nurses deliver babies with the help of nuns. Their lives and patients.
I love a great movieThe first season is on Netflix. Totally recommend it. For some reason, historical stuff like that, Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice, etc, really helps distract me when my mood goes south. Not quite sure why that is. After my first surgery, I was on the couch for a month, super depressed, and that seemed to be all I could handle. Watched a lot of historical movies too, like The Lion in Winter and A Man for All Seasons.

I watch the movies over and over again. I've read the books at least three times. I started reading the books while undergoing chemo after my initial diagnosis. Another great movie is Moonstruck with Cher and Nicolas Cage.
Best three years of my family's life may have been those when HP and LOTR movies were coming out within a few months of each other every winter. Now we own them and they are well worth rewatching. And I'm reading the books for the 3rd or 4th time to my youngest. There's nothing quite like a good fantasy to take you out of yourself and away from the hardships of treatment.
ETA this comment is for Traci. Kind of irritating these comments don't always go where you want them to...

Wow! I feel as if I've been living on another planet! I've never heard of 90% of those shows and movies!! Where have I been???
My current TV favorites are the Big Bang Theory, Elementary, NCIS and Hell's Kitchen. Except for the original series, I loved all of the Star Trek shows, including the spin-offs, and I always hit the theatre on opening day of the Start Trek movies. (Although I've never dressed the costume like a few of my co-workers did last month - and while at work too!!) ;D

love all things zombie. We all read World War Z and loved it.
I have a feeling that the Brad Pitt version won't do it justice, but we'll probably go see it anyway.
We recently watched "Warm Bodies". That was pretty decent.

haven't thought of that show in a long time. I remember watching it every week when I was a kid. It was a sweet show, and I'll bet it was very comforting to watch it while going through tx (so not laughing at all!).
Weird to think how limited our viewing options used to be. Just this thread alone shows how many different shows there are now, and we've only just scratched the surface. A far cry from the days when pretty much everybody tuned into Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley every week without exception.

my late sister and I used to go with our husbands to opening night for all the ST movies, usually in the front of the line, even if it meant a long wait. I was too young for the original series, but she was six years older and made sure I knew all about it and watched it in reruns when we were kids.
I even once made a homemade Tribble, which was basically nothing but a piece of furry material filled with stuffing.
I was a weird kid.
