Tomorrow is PEG day

I ended up in the ER getting 4 more hours of IV fluids today (just had 4 hours of them Monday), I had lost 5 lbs since then and the oncologist was beyond concerned.  My oncologist (not my fave) is on vacation for 2 weeks so the one I like is seeing me.  He sent me right over to the ER and got fluids going and then asked why in the world had I not gotten a PEG yet?  I told him that was a good question as it has never been mentioned and when I mentioned it, nothing was ever said.  So, I go in tomorrow to have one put in.  I'm so relieved as my blood work and urine showed I was very dehydrated and malnourished. Wish me luck!!

    YEAH....on your PEG

FINALLY, you needed a PEG weeks ago.

Shame on your medical team for not insisting that you have one before now.

You will feel so much better once you get fluids and nutrition.

It would be a damn shame to survive the cancer and die of starvation.

    yeah!

    Tracy,

So glad to see progress and you getting a PEG. It was overdue in your case and still a bit baffling in your case as nearly all others report their doctors barking out the treat of getting a PEG ordered in they lose a single pound more, indicating they all know how fundamental basic nutrition and hydration are.

In fact, for most of us here, THE mantra of HNC forum is hydrate, nutrition, and pain management. If you watch just these three things you will survive and thrive, although the journey may still think you are riding through hell there is sunshine on the other end.

So glad your spirits seem so much better too. It seems like it is really coming together for you and I am trilled for it! don

    Good decision

Dehydration can trigger numerous other serious issues. Keeping your weight at a consistent healthy number is key also as you may need a little xtra LBS in case your treatment gets rough.

I just had my first meal....

with the PEG and I was terrified at first, but it worked great and I started feeling better very quickly.  The surgery went fine yesterday but they did have to put me completely under.  They had some worries about my airway as I'm still quite swollen from the surgeries, but everything worked out fine.  I'm still quite sore around it and I had some cramping last night, but I can tell the pain is getting less and less.  Thank you all for the support!! I'm so glad this other oncologist was the one to see me.  He could NOT believe my weight had gotten so bad and a feeding tube had never been issued.  The surgeon was baffled too as he said I was very malnourished.  On to better days!!

    Good to see

your spirits are up. Once you get the hang of it feeding goes so quick.

Your mouth now gets the break it needs and your tummy gets its nutrition. Can't wait until we hear that you have put on some weight or at least stabilized.

Once you get that nutrition you will start to feel real good.

TracyLynn , I am so glad to hear that you got your Peg and that you are feeling better already ! I didn't have to get one as I had plenty of extra weight to lose and I did not have oral surgery so I didn't get dehydrated so I didn't say to much to you but I knew from what I have learned on here that a lot of  your symptoms sounded like you needed a peg ! You are going to feel so much better for the rest of your treatments ! Hang in there .

    Well it's in by now....

....and it sounds like it's already working for you.  Makes a huge difference in how you feel doesn't it?  Now the worry of not getting enough nutrition and hydration hanging over you at the same time you feel like schmidt will fade away and you can just do the one foot in front of the other till treatment is over.

I'm SO SO glad you were able to change your mind about quitting.

    Awesome News...

Hopefully when you get back on track the possibility for continuing the last little bit of treatment will be considerd.

But if not, I hope that everything will continue to be great for you and you have nothing but great things in store for your long and happy life.
