How is it going? Want to talk?
My husband also has 3g lung cancer.
We have been married for 38 years.Hi. My husband had his entire left lung removed. And part of the heart sac. The dr. Thought that they were going to remove part of the lung. He had a ct scan and a pet scan and when they opened him they found that the cancer was entwined around the lobes of the left lung and was heading for his heart.
I asked why these high tech scans didnt show all the cancer.and he said cancer hides. They removed his lymph node as well and it was cancerous as well. He did some chemo, but had to quit early because his body couldn't take it. The dr now wants him to take 25 sessions of radiation. But we are worried abt his heart and only 1 lung. They told us of he didnt have radiation he would prob get cancer in the brain or bones within 1 yr. My husband will be 59. We have been married for 37 years and worked together for most of those yrs. I don't understand what the letter a or b means after stage 3. All I know is he has stage 3 lung cancer what does the a or b mean? My husband was a very active man before this all began 8 months ago.
My husband still has pain from the surgery almost 4 months ago he isn't eating well from the chemo and he soon will start radiation. He is a loving decent man. We are both devestated.

welcome. IDear suenakim,
welcome. I don't know the difference between a and b, sorry. Please consider starting a new thread to ask for more info. New entries can be hard to locate in these long threads. To start one, go to the page that lists all the threads and find the phrase Start a New Entry or something similar. You can copy and paste your whole entry so you don't have to write it again.
The doctor can give you a prescription for an appetite enhancer. calories are more important than balanced diet right now. So stock things he liked in the past. If he is on one of the platinum drugs (cisplatin or carboplatin) things will taste metallic so use plastic forks and spoons. It's okay to ask for an extra week of rest before starting radiation.
I look forward to hearing more from you.

Hi, my mum was diagnosed in April 2011 with stage 3a lung cancer. A tumor in her right lobe and a tumor in her lymph node in chest well on the left side. We were told that mum needed the most strongest treatment of chemo and radiation at the same time for 5 weeks. Radiation daily and chemo once a week. We were told this will shrink tumor and by my Mum a few years but chances of cancer going were extremely slim. We were very scared.
Amazingly my mum who really didn't have any symptoms of lung cancer and is 69 and slim and generally in good health went thru the treatment rather good. Yes she was tired and for a 2 weeks found it extremely didfficult to swallow and was in pain. She did not loose all her hair and about 5 weeks after treatment ended up with radiation phemiontis - a cough, shortness of breath and low fever, steroids improved this condition quickly.
Mum managed to go on a holiday 3 months after treatment. She feeling a little weak and off balance and so doctor is weaning mum off steroid.
2 scans show that the cancer has GONE!. Which is rather remarkable.
My advice to loved ones and your dad is to be patient and go easy on yourself, listen to your body and stay positive.
All the best for a positive recovery.
I'm from Australia and my mum was on taxol and cisplatin and strongest radiationAmazing forum ..giving Hopes to deal with Lung Cancer...
My Dad is diagonised with LC -Stage 3B only 3 days back with size of 5.2 cm X6.2 cm on left lower lobe of lung and we did seek second opinion and doc opinioned that it was Inoperable case and we could start Chemo & Radiation.
The Current Doc has proposed only Chemo and my Dad's firsct Chemo was done with Gemcite to-day. After going through this forum , where combinaton of Radiation and Chemo has done wonders in shrinking the tumor. Doctor advised us that Radiation we can do later after 3 cycles of chemo in 21 day cycle followed by PET scan as my Dad is not experiencing any pain atm and Radiation is given only to subdue any pain.
I'm not sure How far I'm in right direction in treatment of my Dad-Stage 3B Lung cancer..Please Advice.

Please also post this information at the Inspire web site. Lots of stage III and IV survivors with many treatment experiences. I was a stage 1a and had surgery to remove the lower right lobe on 9-23-10, and so far so good. I hope that the chemo will shrink the tumor where the lower left lobe could be removed. I wish you and your dad well. Lori

3b lung cancer
My name is Rodney. I turned 50 last April. In September I was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. My tumor was over 11 cm.. I am half way done with treatment which is Cisplatin and Etopicide. 35 Radiation treatments. Last week i had a ct scan. My tumor has shrunk to 4 cm Over 60%.. I have never had any side effects from anything. I am beginning to feel a little optimistic.

Your dadAlysa said:3b lung cancer.
Hello, my name is Alysa and we just found out in November that my dad has 3b lung cancer. I am hoping you can help give some insight to this. He has been through almost 8 weeks radiation and chemo. They had to stop it for a couple of weeks because it made him so ill. So far the blood tests that they have done have come back good and I think he has managed to keep most his weight on because he has kept himself hydrated (drinking Gatorade etc) and also drinking things like Insure and eating good. He just started the radiation back up this past week and it just wipes him out, he is dreading the chemo which I think starts back up the 16th. He is not acting right as far as emotionally, he is doing funny things, not talking much just emotionless most of the time. My mom is kind of at her wits end because she has tried to get him to go talk to someone about this, but he doesn't want to do it. It is almost like he is battling with himself as to whether he wants to continue the treatments or not. I think he is angry also, which I know is normal. He has made the comment to me and her both that he is over it. My sisters both tell my mom "Dont you let him stop the therapies, make sure he keeps going. My thoughts are that if he decides that he doesn't want to do them then nobody should force him. I love him and don't want anything to happen but I think it should be his decision. Am I right in feeling that way? I am just really confused right now. Another thing that I have noticed with him is forgetting things. I don't know if it is because he has so much on his mind or if it is something else.
Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

I often recommend people starting a new thread as your post gets so easily lost in these old ones but I did find you post in here. My husband is stage 3b as well. Treatment was hard. The chemo used was cisplatin and estoposide. 6 weeks of chemo and 8 of radiation. He was very weak and tired. The radiation burnt his esophagus so it was very hard for him to eat anything and he lost a lot of weight. Initially they gave him 8 months to live. That was in April 2014. In Dec 2014 he was pronounced NED (no evidence of disease) and remains that way today. Will it be that way for your mom? I don't know but I sure hope so. I also welcome you to going us in the chat room on here. It is busiest between 8 and 930 to 10 om est every night. All the best to your mom and you and your family.

Stage 3b Survivor
Boling03, that's good to hear that you're a stage 3b survivor. I've just got a couple of weeks of treatment left for stage 3a NSCLC, after a lower left lobectomy. I just wanted to mention that you are responding to a very old post started in 2008, so you might want to start a new discussion thread. Anyway, congrats to you and thanks for sharing your success.
