in Esophageal Cancer #1

My GI doc has been watching atipical cells in my Barret's escphagus for awhile.  My last endoscopy showed high displaisia and I was referred to a Dr Alfonso Ribeiro with the U of Miami Medical Center.  I need to know if this is the best doctor/hospital in my area, south Florida, for treatment of possible GI malignancies.  Anyone else In South Florida have experience/recommendations with above?

 

after reading what some of you are experienceing, I'm getting concerned.

    We live in Fort Myers FL. My husband had the same diagnosis of high grade dysplasia after being monitored for Barrett's for over 10 years.  We were refered to Dr. Herbert Wolfsen at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.  After much testing, my husband was told that he needed to have surgery. After a lot of investigating on the internet,we ultimately went to Pittsburgh for a MIE with Dr. Luketich at UPMC. He is the pioneer in the procedure.  He has done over 1000 MIE's with good results. There is a Dr. Waxman in Boca Raton who was trained in MIE by Dr. Luketich. I haven't heard of the doctor in Miami that you mentioned.  I would inquire if he does the minimally invasive procedure -MIE. The recovery time is much shorter than with the Ivor Lewis.

    Thanks flmo.  It looks like I'm in for a long ride, just hope I'm going in the right direction.

    From what I can gather, RF is a good approach if high grade dysplasia is caught early.  We were told that my husband would have the procedure done every 3 months for a year. Unfortuanately, by the time my husband got an appointment at the Mayo Clinic for the RF treatment it was too late. They said surgery was his best option even though he still had only high grade dysplasia, not cancer. That's why it's probably  best to get things started as soon as possible. Best of luck as you search for the best treatment for you.

    I am a 14 year survivor of stage III EC I was initially referred to Dr Luketich in Pittsburgh upon diagnosis and did in fact meet with him, he is the real deal and yes the pioneer of MI. However I ended up having my treatment (radiation, surgery, Iver-Lewis and chemo) performed at University Hospital Ireland Cancer center at Case Western University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Amazing doctors, amazing hospital, and as I stated I am a 14 year survivor of stage III EC with lymph node involvement. Obviously, I would go nowhere else Best of luck to you.
